Jaycar now has a 3G GPS tracker due to the 2G  networks future shutdown.

Don't buy anything restricted to 3G these days, you'll only get a few years out of it at best before they start closing the old network down.

I've read good things about this unit (but haven't bought one myself yet):

https://www.mictrack...4g-gps-tracker/

2G / 3G / 4G / LTE compatible, has some nice features, up to 10 hours runtime after power loss, Chinese brand but looks well built.

Or there's a basic version that's a bit cheaper here:

https://www.mictrack...-tracker-mt600/

The thing I was looking for is to avoid the 'contracted sign up for a monthly fee monitoring company' BS, just grab a pre-paid SIM and you're away. Although I must admit I haven't really gotten into the receiving side of things, at the very least I expect it would just send GPS coordinates but maybe they have some kind of mapping software available?

Most will simply include a Google maps link with the location in the text message. A lot come with "free" accounts to online services for you to track via their web site (not actual monitoring) but I really dislike the idea of giving someone else the info.

I was a bit reluctant to post this but here goes.

Buy one of these. Make sure it it the MT600-E version. The MT500 is the old 3G version and wont work on Australian network. The MT600 is the 4G model and the "E" is for the Australian network frequencies. This is very good value for money and the cheapest 4G tracker you will find.

https://www.ebay.com...872.m2749.l2649

Get a prepaid sim card. I use the Vodafone prepaid 365plus version as it has a 1 year expiry. $30 is fine.

https://www.vodafone...u/prepaid/plans

Create a free account on the GPS Trace website. and download the free app and install on your mobile

http://gps-trace.com/en/index.html

Install and setup the GPS tracker as per this video

https://www.mictrack...video-tutorial/

http://forum.gps-tra...mt500-e-tlt-2h/

Download and read this manual on the MT600, this one is for the MT500 but the commands and setup is the same.

https://www.mictrack...Manual_V3.0.pdf

You may not need all the commands eg tow alert etc but thats up to you.
You set up via sending SMS commands to the tracker then using the GPS Trace you can watch location in real time via web browser or on your phone.

Checking the links in my previous post I noticed that Vodafone no longer have the 365 day prepaid SIM so you may need to try other carriers.

Thanks for the info Brett. Just one clarification, according to their web sites and reading the unit specifications (at https://www.mictrack...4g-gps-tracker/) the Australian model you want is MT600-AU not MT600-E as that is for Europe. However the Europe version may work depending on which Telephone network you use as there is cross over in the supported frequencies on both devices. The page https://www.mictrack...ncy-bands-list/ let’s you find out frequencies supported by various providers (assuming it is accurate!), not sure what YES means but assume all providers support it.

Mick I would say that is probably correct if buying the Australian MicTrack model (At a bit more cost I imagine). The ones available on eBay out of China specify that the "E" model is for EU/Asia/AU and that is what I purchased and it works well. When I purchased mine some time ago there weren't a lot available on eBay but there seems to be a lot more available now so just do a search for MT600 GPS Tracker.

What I will say is I used a Vodafone network SIM and it worked straight out of the box. A mate got the same one and used a Telstra SIM and it wouldn't recognise the network and he had to make a program change to make it work. I have sent him an email to check what he did. When he gets back to me with the info I will post it here.

This is the reply I got from my mate who had issues with the Telstra SIM

"I had to use a vodafone sim to get it setup, it wouldn't register on telstra network.

I followed your instructions with voda sim, then changed the number it takes commands from to the telstra sim number, put telstra sim in, updated the orange-gps.com settings with new number and it worked.

Factory resetting it and trying to start with telstra sim wouldn't work. Confusing."

I was searching for car trackers and was getting crap info from a number of websites. Then Gmh-torana popped up in the search and I thought you Torana guys always have good advice and sure enough spot on with the MT600 recommendation. Good work.

Cheers Brett. Depending how long ago you bought maybe the -AU model wasn’t available yet, or they created one when people had issues like your mate.
I did see the eBay item you mention as I saw the “EU/Asia/AU” designation selection.
I also saw another eBay ad that had the 3 options as per the MicTrack web site I.e -A (for America), -EU/Asia and then the -AU model.
I also saw another eBay ad that didn’t specify the model or let you select it, when I contacted them the model they send you is based on the delivery address and for Australia the will send the -AU model.

Of course buying direct from the MicTrack web site is another option and you select the model you want.

Another question for you, send me an IM if you don’t wish to discuss on here:
Was it easy to hide the mobile antenna?
Was it easy to hide the GPS antenna as that is a lot bigger by the looks and they say not to put it behind metal, ideally they want it on the window but that defeats part of the purpose IMHO.

Mick , Cheers for that. Out of interest I just ordered another one from the same seller as before for my other car so will be interesting what actually they send.

Ill PM you in regards to how I installed mine.

Analogue, 2G and CDMA have all been switched off. 3G is alive and well. If 4G is not available then your mobile falls back to 3G. It will be years before 3G is turned off.

Hi Steve,
Is this one setup via SMS messages or do you have to use the companies app? That eBay ad says they have created a quick setup guide, could you post that up here?
Cheer Mick

Hi Mick, initial setup is done with SMS. Mainly setting the password. I found the default settings fine. You can track it with SMS, mobile app and internet site. I no longer have a copy of the quick setup guide. Full guides are available here. http://www.999gps.org/Manual_en.html

Some of it is in Chinglish, but not too hard to work out.

What type of SIM are people using? Ive got an Optus Data SIM on my account which dosnt cost me anything and it simply shares the data from my plan.

However we do not have any Optus Mobile Service where we live. There is Telstra Service, but I dont see anything like a basic Data Sim from Telstra on their website?

And that MT600. Is there any other way to get vehicle location other than via the website? I dont want to pay $5 USD every year for a website.
