Just an update to my instructions for the MT600 GPS Tracker.
I ordered another one and have setup as per my original post. There are some changes from when I setup my first MT600.
Vodafone no longer have a prepaid 365 day SIM. Instead I ordered an Aldimobile SIM card that have a 365 day expiry. You cant buy these in store and have to be ordered online.
https://www.aldimobi....au/plans/payg/
Also when you order the MT600 tracker stipulate the AU version. Mine came as part number MT600-AU.
Also when you create a free account on GPS-Trace you cant have any more than 1 vehicle tracker listed. To get around this I just created another account using a different email address.
Cheers.

Hey guys and girls, old thread but new technology available.
Whats are some more recent GPS tracking devices you guys have come across, Ive noticed 4g trackers at Jaycar for around $230.00, smaller in size than 3g, no external antannas and have a internal battery incase the main car battery is removed.
Your thoughts ?
Cheers

I am still using the MT600 in both cars and working fine with the aldi 365 day expiry sim. nearly a year and it still has near the original $15 balance and is set to update the location every 10 seconds, so it uses no or little credit. The only credit it will use is during the setup process where you send it SMS commands and it replies with a SMS.
The MT600 also has a 6hr inbuilt battery plus the main battery connection. the only thing that has changed recently is the GPS trace website it is now https://ruhavik.gps-trace.com/
With the new trace website I have noticed that you can now add more than 1 device to a single logon, Before I had to have 2 Logons for my 2 devices but now they are both on the one.

Thanks Brett, Is it possible without to much micro surgery to add another external battery to the tracker, something abit larger to pro long the life of the device incase the worse happens and car goes missing, Something in the way of a Lithium home security battery, that will last a week or two. ? Did you purchase the MT600 online ?

The commodore I run off the car battery but if you dont start it and charge within about 2 weeks it flattens the battery.
I got mine from here. https://www.ebay.com...872.m2749.l2649

How do you power the phone permanently? They don’t like being powered forever and they don’t last long on a charge either.

The hardware isn't that expensive anyway, and for the sake of a hundred bucks, I think I'll take the reliability of the dedicated tracker over an old cell phone that may or may not stay powered up when you need it most.
Plus with the tracker you can have remote engine shutdown.

Agree. But the ones I have looked into and tried, they don’t run very long when the power is disconnected. Also a bit hit and miss when responding to being asked for its location I.e. no response. And that is with testing on the kitchen table powered with a decimated power supply.
Anyone tried a device that lasted longer than about 2 hours on its own battery? That is the biggest issue I find. Installing another battery in parallel might be an option. Need a simple switch that switches when main car battery power disconnects rather than on always would be ideal.

Maybe this topic has gone stale but I'm looking at these two trackers now.
The first option has 20000 mAh batteries that reportedly will last for months.

I still think that these are very good and at $100 from Mictrack a very good buy. Especially when you have them on an additional 12v battery source.

Or this one for $65 without the addittional features you probably wouldnt use any way.

I just ordered another one for myself and noted that the prices are in U.S dollars, but still a good buy at $96 AU for the base model. plus free postage.

I'd guess the 4G network still has quite a few years life in it yet (they haven't even turned off 3G yet, happening June 2024 last I heard).
So definitely DON'T buy a 3G tracker, but I wonder how long until we see 5G capable units?

I’m interested to know how that first link one (The one with 20000mAh battery) goes if you try it, how long the battery really lasts. A few months would be good, simple install at least and just charge it up when it tells you low battery. Probably could wire in charging when ACC is on too. Post back if you buy and try it.
The second link one just looks like a repackage of one I tried, certainly same wiring diagram and a lot of similar wording re description and features. The internal battery won’t last long as only 200mAh, lucky for an hours or 2, especially if it is reporting its location.

Brett, can this tracker receive a signal from a regular car alarm to let you know the alarm has been triggered? Useful if you are too far away to hear the alarm

According to the specification sheet for the $99 model it says it has 2 digital inputs so I would say yes it could take an input from an alarm system.Brett, can this tracker receive a signal from a regular car alarm to let you know the alarm has been triggered? I have to move camp soon and the car i have built will be heading south - but not with me
It will be in a container and may have to be left in it for a few days
Looking at piece of mind i would like to install one of these things and like the look of the top one with the internal battery
What actually is involved in these things?
Do i need another phone and seperate SIM?
Sorry but brainless newb when it comes to this stuff

I reckon you might struggle to get a signal inside a shipping container? The carrier network *may* be okay depending on where it is at the time but the GPS signal will almost certainly be non-existent (unless somebody removes the car from the container, then it would pay dividends).
You just need a SIM card with enough credit on it, but some providers are fussy about activating SIM cards in data devices so you might need to pop it into a phone, activate the account, then transfer the SIM card to the GPS tracker?

The car would have to come out at some stage if there is no signal from inside so ok with that
So let me get this straight
Buy a SIM
Get it activated say with my own phone
SIM gets installed into the tracker
I get my own phone reinstated and download an App that will track the device

Sounds about right, it just depends on the carrier whether they will activate the SIM card in a data-only device.
I know, for example, that I couldn't activate an ALDImobile SIM card unless it was in an actual phone (don't ask me why, I tried with it in a remote CCTV camera). But once activated it could be moved across and worked just fine.
Different trackers require different methods to track them, with some you need to subscribe (with a monthly fee) to a tracking service, some can stream over an internet connection, and some send SMS messages every time you request the location.
It just depends on the model you buy.

3G vs 4G distance from a repeater range is also something to consider,
as the thief will have you track to the last known location.
As for the Aldi Mobile sim pack, from post above:
