Not sure if they have sorted overhaul kits out these days, but year ago you were supplied with a input shaft bearing where the retainer clip was much thicker than the original. If you didn't swap it out with the original (thinner clip) you where guaranteed to crack the flange of the front cover when tensioning up the bolts.
I was one of the ones that learnt this lesson the hard way. Definitely worth checking!
Second box main shaft has the modified coil oil groove as seen here.
The oil groove on the main shaft was common machining modification made to the shaft when the finish in that area had deteriorated/ scoured. I think first gear runs over that area of the shaft and you will find the gear that came with this shaft has been retrofitted with a bronze bush.
It's a good thing to have if someone intends on hammering the little Aussie box.
Both firsts fit the coil grooved main shaft. One gear has 489 and the other is 3489 with a added stamp of J-02. Both holden. No bushes installed.

This groove isn't machined into standard shaft. Either different shaft or it's machined down and this is a sleeve????
marty that is the spiral main shaft. it's an after engineering item to keep oil flow around the gear. - im trying to check my photos - im pretty sure.
thats interesting to find that.
what size lay shaft is in the box in diameter

this is the one out of my car.
just checking on the lay shaft size and the up spec box lay shaft is 21mm.
you can see the difference in the spiral cut distance between the loops.
Also have a look at the size of the circlip as well on the end.

I'm having a moment, seriously thinking of buying the 200kw box from J&VR transmissions, sounds like a great box at a great price.
I'll be up for $1225 but at least it'll be an XU-1 ratio box with all new gear. If any one lives near this place and has a poxy all aussie they can trade??? they want $150 if I don't exchange a box. I could pay you $75 and I save $75???
Anyway heres the info, any comments good and bad please, also please confirm the XU-1 Ratio is best for me or should I go M21??
Cheers
Marty

^ Isn't that the guy mentioned several times on the forum for 3 months turning into 2yrs and still no box, I've had a divorce, going thru issues, dog shit on the ground where he rebuilds boxes, rebuilt boxes looking like they have been dragged from under the house etc etc?

Just my personal opinion Marty and you can tell me where to stick it if you wish.
$1,250.00 for a 200kw rated Aussie 4 spd box behind a mild 202?
I reckon building a box with the best parts you have on hand and possibly a ratio change to XU1 (changing to V8 M21 ratio will also require replacing 3rd gear) specs will serve you well and you'll have some coin left over.
Just my 5 cents.
Cheers
Dave.

I know the thread, pretty sure that's aussie four speeds or similar. This guy has 100% feedback on eBay.

Hi Dave, yeah the 200kw is overkill but they don't do standard ones to get the xu1 ratio box I need, cluster, all 4 gears and overhaul kit which would be about $800, then I have to assemble. Or I use what I have, get overhaul kit and second gear for about $250 and live with the m20 ratio. I'll sleep on it.
Marty, you can buy the repro XU1 input shafts and cluster gears on ebay.
You don't need to procure any other parts, other than a rebuild kit, unless they are stuffed.
You have an oil seal type front cover from your 3 spd box that will suit a repro XU1 input shaft so you are good to go.

Let me get this right Dave. All I need to get xu1 ratios is. Xu1 cluster and input shaft and just use my m20 gears?

Zactly Marty. The M20 mainshaft gears are all the same for XU1.

Dave is spot on, I have done the same to two gearbox.
From ebay, Xu1 input and cluster plus o'haul kit into M20 = Xu1 m20/21 ratio.

Thought I'd put this up for you Marty, just in case you don't know.
Make sure your dummy layshaft for the cluster gear is a bit smaller in diameter than a proper layshaft. The reason being the layshaft hole in the front end of the box casing is made to be an interference fit on the layshaft. Never install or remove a layshaft through the front hole. Always remove and install via the rear hole. For this reason the dummy shaft needs to be able to easily slide through the front hole as you push the new layshaft in from the rear.

Great, somehow I got confused with the M21 ratios where I would need another 3rd gear as well.

Dunno Dave, but he uses all new synchro rings. Take a look at his ad pics, the one of the open box showing all the gears installed. Check out the new synchro rings on 1st, 2nd & 3rd and the used synchro ring on 4th.
What some people claim they do and what they actually do are different animals.
