Hey all,

Finally i've had enough time to hit the keys again to show you what's been happening behind the scenes.

Picked up a cheap 1989 BMW E30 318i that was destined for a life less boring & decided to get busy.

The plan was always to drop my 202 from the EH into it, so while i was using that engine, I got to work on the rest of the car. So far it's copped a complete stripping of trim, a 5 stud rear conversion, new rear shocks, springs & mounts, discs, pads & caliper rebuilds. The front end can wait for now until I know how it will sit with the engine in place.

Diff ratio will be the shortest I can possibly go with the small case E30 diffs, 4.45.

Picked up a couple of 15 x 7 beemer rims that will have some ET Street 235's fitted shortly & the fronts will stay as the 14 x 6 for now too.

Got an RCI racing seat & 5 point harness to bang in, aswell as a line locker.

The idea is to keep things to a minimum, so even the spare wheel tub was cut out, which i will plate with some thin alloy. Also the brake booster has been ditched & the master cylinder will now be mounted on the drivers side on the firewall.

I began to dummy up another engine to check the fit & its pretty good, i think...

With an EH sump fitted, it actually sits on the crossmember at the middle step of the sump and with good clearance to the firewall for the pipes, trans & head etc...

My question is, should i recess it back into the cabin while i have the chance now??

I'm thinking like 6 - 8 inches into the cabin, but then getting to the carbs may be an issue, aswell as everything else that is...

Here's a few shots for you anyway, more to come.

I used to have an 85 E30 318.

Much as i like what your doing, it was possibly the best handling car i have owned to date.

If your setting it up for drag use, could i suggest you set it up moreso for khanacross or similar type events, if such an event is local to you?

I'd love to get another one and set it up for turny turny racing.

Everything is better with a 202 though.

If i had realized one would fit so nicely in the bay i certainly would have kept it!!!!

Cheers.

I thought about it bomber, but i love my drags.

Would be great to turn corners, but i would go the whole hog with coil overs, big brakes, keep it manual. Might aswell call myself a doriffftor...

It'll cop a manual steering rack swap & a rear swaybar which it never had either.

Love yer work.

Recess it now...cut the passenger side of the firewall back as well as the middle to give carb clearance.

You will probably have to do a tunnel as well when you shift it back, or move the original tunnel back with the firewall section still attached to it and fill the gaps.

The drama is, i think it actually sits in there too good to cut the firewall back!

But moving it rearwards was the original plan too.

I like it.

Stick car?

It would be nice if it had a solid rear end instead of the IRS, be easier to set the rear up to get it of the line.

Ha ha, NUTHIN!
I guess maybe only coz they're at my house and both awesome😜

Yeah Warren it would be great if it was a solid rear end but you can't have everything, so I'll have to work with it & see how it goes.
And no, not stick. Sorry bud...

Let me guess....

Both not really suited for the intended purpose of the finished product.

EDIT: Oh and by the way, love the thread and will follow with interest.

Sorry for the thread steal but I thought it was a fitting bit of useless trivia,  The Bosch Jetronic fuel injection system as used on the 202 in the VK is the same system that was used on both BMW Cars and Motorcycles...

Hmm interesting, its not really hard to fit a big 6 in an E30, doing a E46 M3 S54 3.2L into one with a mate at the moment....bolt in with very few mods, and surprisingly cheap to buy the complete wrecked M3, sold off everything except motor, wiring etc and ended up paying less than 2K for what we kept...248Kw @ 7900rpm ITB screamer. Still needs a turbo tho i reckon !

^^^^Totally.
We work on these things all the time & toy around with ideas on what would work & what wouldn't. That s54 conversion would be the dux guts if work was paying for it, and for punting it around corners.

Love it!
What do these weigh standard?

If recessing the firewall and moving the engine back makes it easier to work on I wouldn't hesitate to do it now, especially around the rear carb and the harmonic damper when doing turning the engine over for lash adjustments.
The IRS should be more forgiving with an auto.

Out of the factory Kev, about 1065kgs or 2350lbs.

This one will see the weighbridge too, if only to compare it to the EH. Hoping to tip the scales at around 900kgs.

Still not sold on the recessing yet, it looks too good at the moment.

Interior is in the bin Jim, along with anything else that was considered "weight".

Alrighty then, its been a while but here's an update...

After clearancing the tunnel & firewall, the engine sits nicely back as far as practicable. Made up the engine crossmember and had a win with the trans support... I can use the original bracket in the most rearward position, sweet as...

Fab'd up a nice sheet of ally to cover the spare wheel well & made the seat frame with harness attatchments built in.

.

Had some refreshments...

The master cylinder has been relocated over to the drivers side, with the brake lines modified to suit.

Had to fab a new linkrod off the brake pedal to the master, nothing hard there.

Found some cool headlight protectors on fleebay that will let me get rid of the headlights. Just have to mount them behind the front grilles & paint some eyes on em.

Finally I've made the call to swap the front end over to 5 stud. Using E36 328i front struts/discs/calipers with E30 mounts, should let me put on whatever wheels I want now.

Looking good. I see there are a few bottles of "thinking" fluid in the first pic. :spoton:
