Hey people,

Got a question if anyone can help, Ive searched for the differences between LX Sunbird and a STD LX Torana and found out that the Sunbird was the first ever Holden to have Radial tuned suspension. I also found that the Sunbird came with 4 speed floor shift with console and bucket seats, that's about all I could see.

Are there any other differences that you could tell me about please???

Now I'm talking about only LX not UC and only on the 6cyl LX Sunbird not any others, I would also like to ask about rear Radius rod position, I know that the UC has these in a different position to STD but does the LX 6cyl Sunbird have them in a different position or at a different angle.

Cheers guys

All SUnbirds had 4 cly motor, the early LX with the Opal 4cly and the later LC/UC Starfire 4cly.

Oh Shit, I assumed that the LX Sunbirds had sixes in them because I just brought one with a 202 and 4 speed in it.

Blond moment, LX opal 4cly, early UC opel 4cly and the later UC had the Starfire 4cly which carried into the commodore range.

backyard and mechanics etc, no Sunbird left the factory with anything else than a 4cyl, it was GHM's marketing trying to target the jap market buyers.

Tell us what engine code is on your compliance plate to confirm.

Ok will do when i get it, Any problems getting it licenced with 308, I have been told that the compliance plate actually says Torana not Sunbird so it can't really be disputed, might have to ask the WA boys if it is possible over here.

As above all Sunbirds were 4cyl. The Sunbird sedan was the first to get RTS in the U size car. Technically a Sunbird isn't a Torana, it is a Holden Sunbird or GMH Sunbird. I have no idea why GMH put Torana on the ADR plate. One school of thought is the plates were partailly pre-stamped and they didn't know if they were going on a Sunbird or Torana so they put Torana on them all. They managed not to put Holden on Statesmans though, but Dandenong didn't build any of these during Torana/Sunbird timeframe so not really a good indicator. It is good though for those wanting to but bigger engines in!

Lets bloody hope so, cause the Transport and licence dept over here are real tight asses we it comes to modifications especially V8's

From personal experience I've found that the bush in one end of the lower rear trailing arms is a weaker bush (holes through it) in the 4cyl whereas the 6 & 8 cyl have a solid rubber bush both ends

If you have an LX Sunbird, you cannot put a 6 or and eight in it unless you change the K frame to a 6 or v8 one as the engine mounts are different.

You can however us a UC Sunbird K frame as the engine mounts are the same.

I remember in 1983, an Apprentice friend spent a said $15000 on race 253 in a Sunbird.

sounds a bit high now I think about it, but that's what he said.

The car I bought has a 6 already in it so that means it should be all good for a 308 do you think

I don't reckon, not under NCOP anyway. Max engine size would be based on relevant tare vehicle weight multiple X biggest original engine capacity for your vehicle model (4 cyls diff model to 6s). I asked an engineer about this for my LC 4 cylinder. If it was a factory 6, yes, factory 4, no. Google NCOP section LA from memory to confirm. May vary according to which state you are in though. Good luck!

^^I don't think that applies to an LX, it goes by the heaviest sedan in the series which will be an SLR5000. LC is a bit different as it is a different car, LX should work like a HQ. But if that is a problem pull the BODY and VIN tags off, and no-one would know what it was. Unless they really know LX's.

Pretty sure the LX is a different senario mate, at least I hope so for my sake.

NCOP states ''all vehicles originally weighing more than 1100kg - original mass (kg) x 5.0 = max capacity in cc's''

LX Sunbird - 1161kg (says google) x 5.0 = 5805cc...

4 and 6 cyl LC have a different floorpan, different tar weight, etch.

Does not apply to boxy Toranas.
