Then tell the Handbrake if she loves her horses to buy the AWD.
Just my opinion.............who has towed a few horse floats.

The 2WD and AWD Klugers are only rated to tow 2000 kg which would make them marginal for a dual float.

Better off getting a used Landcruiser for the same coin.
That's what Ah reckon!

Hi....have done a fair bit of towing of car trailers and caravans over the years.
Would suggest the 4WD version if the budget can do it.
4WD is good for towing as all 4 wheels are pulling forward when the trailer is being bad and trying to wobble around or whatever.( assuming the vehicle is constant/all wheel drive type)
Also, ( regardless of weight distribution hitches etc etc) there is always some weight transfer from the trailer to the towball ( measured as ""ball weight"" ) , this naturally unloads the front wheels a little/or a lot, depending on the setup. Thus, one may find oneself sitting in a wet / dewy / rained on road/ grass paddock / pony club / or even street, with the car unable to move forward as it sits there wheelespinning.
I can clearly recall a good mate being in Port Maquarie NSW one day with a 16ft van on his new Camry. Stopped on a hill , went for lunch, it rained....when he came out he was stuck there until the rain stopped and the road dried. Tried to take off...but just wheelspin ( couldn't reverse as there were people park behind). Camry = sold. Prado = bought.
Go the 4WD if you can.....it also gives you the flexibility to go offroad / on the beach if that ever takes your fancy.

We use a 1991 AWD diesel Landcruiser for towing car trailer/bike trailer - awesome, never a drama

What LS2LXHatch said is correct. I would look at something like Landcruiser or BT50 etc with 3500kg towing capacity.

I can see it now, windy hilly rolling bit of highway, cruise control set, it kicks back a gear, spins the fronts...... Loose all steering, off the side of the hill.

I have towed a few Klugers out at the boat ramp with my r51 pathfinder diesel and find klugers tow well as long as they are out of gear

Kluger AWD is the same as our RX350, they are FWD and the rears only work when needed. They do have a switch you can turn them into a locked up 4WD but it is for offroad only. System works well on the road but I wouldn't recommend it for towing. You'd be far better off with a V6 auto Landcruiser Prado or a 4.0L petrol Territory. Territory are a RWD and can tow 2300kg, and would be about the same price as a Kluger. Prado are part time 4WD (same as Hilux).

Mate, if it was me, I wouldn't tow anything that heavy with anything smaller than a Landcruiser.
When you consider the weight of the float plus 2 horses ,it can and usually does go wrong.
A good 2nd hand 80 series can be picked up for less than 10 grand. I would NOT let my wife do anything less.

I guess...what is the weight of the horse float + horses + any other payload.?
That may answer the question for you anyway....
p.s. from the caravan world , there is currently a BIG push by the NSW police and RTA (RMS) at the moment regarding pulling people over and checking the thing they are towing is within the manufacturers limit for the tow vehicle.....

.race horse vary in weight between 500-700 kg .your looking at around 2 1/2 ton weight behind and if they start playing up in there
they make the car move around quite a bit.been in the back with a stallion once to calm him down and i tell was not a nice place to be lol
friggin thing tried to kill me and i was screaming like big girl for him to stop haha.never again

My wife is thinking of buying Toyota Kluger and she seems to think the fwd model will tow her horse float and horses. I think towing a float with fwd would be a little scary at times with the horses moving about. I want her to buy the awd model but she has been told by a car yard knob that fwd will tow no problems.
Car sales guys never lie to make a sale!

You funny bugger. I reckon you R51 would tow themjust fine if they are in gear.
Oi, my Lux tows awesome....
In the Cooper Basin they refer to them as Rolluxes. I had an auto on cruise control when I travelled over a section of corrigations and it tried hard to swap ends.
