I understand they are changing the numbers, but where are they getting the parts from?
Are the cars stolen too? Maybe some lucky insurance company is going to get their cars back ....... or the owners of a few 'S' spec cars are getting back Bathurst replicas!
Either way it would be good to keep track of these cars.

Without knowing all the facts all those involved are entitled to fair treatment while justice takes its course. There will be innocent victims and perpetrators. The courts need to decide which side of the fence those involved are on.
Indeed, the innocent buyers deserve to be respected as anyone; I can't say the same for the guilty.

Looks like a pretty big operation, definitely not just a dodgy back yard job

So I get a phone call from a person I know in Sydney who has an LJ XU1.
He did not have a JP block in his car (it was a QL block) and decided to buy a JP block from a person allegedly named "name removed" (please don't name people) in Victoria a little while ago.
He spends alot of money on the block/engine and recently received a phone call from Victorian Police wishing to inspect the engine as there appears to be more than 1 car with the same engine number.
He is very upset. Hopefully he has the original engine number/block but who knows.
Not good for anyone, so be very careful guys.

This is the worst news to hear for those who have lost out. I loathe these sorts of arsewipes who pray on others misfortunes. It makes me feel better now that I have gone away from the badged cars simply because I had too much paranoia about having them when I did. Especially when I had two mint 5000's sitting in my shed next to each other. A bodged up banga like mine is all I want nowadays. Can drive it anywhere and not stress. Just my thoughts anyway!

What can be said atm is very limited due to the ongoing Police investigation, and everything needs to have the prefix "allegedly".
So, allegedly, from the initial 'bust' there appears to be 3 main people involved, 2 of which, at least, are forum members, at least 1 quite well known. 1 appears to be a victim, big time, and the other allegedly is helping with enquiries. I'm certainly not naming anyone, both out of respect for the victim(s) and the alleged perpetrator(s) need to be proven as such in a court of law and have the opportunity to defend themselves, before anyone else passes judgement. So Skap, I'm definately not naming anyone. Some background knowledge, research & lateral thinking could possibly narrow the field. As Mick has indicated above, the circle of enquiries is expanding and I understand there are at least 2 people in NSW that have had requests to submit their engines for examination. It's anyone's guess atm as to how big this cesspool is going to get. A very sad state of affairs and probably a nervous and unsettling time for a few car owners. JP

Don't be too confident, if you have any good panels or interchangeable parts, it'll be a target to some. They're very easy to steal so take measures to make it difficult for a thief.

so if anyone bought a Torana from Victoria over the last few years, could be in a little trouble?? I wonder how long they have been doing this ??... maybe some kind of engine number register might help... might even help people find their correct motor for their car ...

Given posts and info appearing on this site over the years I think it may be easy to narrow down who might be involved going by what jpxu1 says.

How long has it been going on for.........try for ever.
Rebirthing cars isn't anything new, coming from the crash repair business in the 80's you would be shocked as to what goes on.
When there money to be made people do some crazy stuff.
And unfortunately a lot of people get burnt along the way.
These guys that have recently been caught are just a drop in the ocean.
It's one of those thing that's near impossible to stamp out .
Classic cars you need to check every fine detail and then get another party to check, as most people wear rose coloured glass.
Hand over huge dollars , then whinge like shit after there mate spots a welded patch around the body number.
That leads to further investigate and they find out they have brought a fake.
Buyer beware and do your homework.
Don't get caught up in the moment, because if you do ......you're a dream customer to a rebirthing crew.

Absolutely, the cars were known as 'number jobs' and it wasn't just the badged models. I heard of one car yard that had their own legitimate panel shop to fix trade-ins; behind the scenes they accepted stolen vehicles so if you bought from this yard, you could have a rebirth.

If someone has left a trace on this site Implicating themselves in this Crime then they are as dumb as they are stupid.
Luckily this forum doesn't allow users to delete or modify their own posts
So no info can be removed (except pic remotely put up on photobucket etc)
So don't be surprised if people with badges on their sleeves start reading the forum gathering information/evidence in the near future (though we already have plenty of coppers here)

Bet not, would love to get a accurate count of how many Ford GT's , valiant E49's, GTS ,SLR'S, GTR , brock commodore etc we're build.
And how many originals now exist , would bet the numbers don't add up.

Having a register of Engine numbers wouldn't be a problem would it ?? IE. JP 123456 currently or last registered in NSW,VIC. QLD. ect. it would show any duplicating of numbers .... and help people track their lost Engine......... maybe

I would guarantee there are members on this site who have pretty comprehensive personally aquired registers of these cars gained through years of research.
Im not saying they are complete registers, but I would assume they are sizable.
And not for public consumption, either.
