Hi everyone,

This could be the dumbest question ever, so I apologise in advance... Are there any differences between an LX and an LH bonnet?

I have an LX and considering a second bonnet (for reverse cowl) and there is an LH bonnet I'm looking at buying but wanted to make sure it would be the same. Again, sorry if it's a dumb question.

Thank you.

correct but to clarify
not a total double skin for the LH just the front section
has an insert clearly visible through the large oval holes
that stops your hand going more than about an inch inside the bonnet
also visible are the spotwelds along the front that hold it in place!
LX has none of these
i believe deleted for adr crumple results or the like!

Would they have changed mid model?

But hey it has got over 38 years of history.

Late LX about May 1977 went to single skin and all A9X,s had light single skin bonnet and they superceded in spare parts bins

Always wondered what the hell a double skin bonnet was.

I'm gong to be anal again but its not a double skin, the skin is the outer panel that is fitted onto the support frame, it's simply a strengthening piece inside the support frame.

LX had double skin up until about 7/1976. Then they went to the single skin.

The LH ones are really heavy, The weight is forward and high, great combination... If I had my time again I would have bought an LX or fibreglass one for my LH.

Hi Andrew, don't alfa do a complete fibre glass bonnet with reverse cowl for lh/lx ???? I'd just go this way unless it isn't legal to use in nsw mate. Gary.

This is correct, I was also baffled (excuse the pun) and wondered why a bonnet would need a double skin.

Thanks @grumpy xu1 / Gary, I was looking at this. Pretty sure nsw is illegal for road unless it meets ADR crash for the year. I looked at getting. Carbon bonnet for a jap rocket I had a few years back and was informed that the manufacturer would have needed to crash test them... NSW police are pretty harsh on the side of the road these days.

I'm going to look into it now though, thank you!

That's heart breaking I was just reading about 2.7 and was stoked thinking it would be ok. What a killer. Damn... Anyone here running them on the street in NSW I wonder?

I have a fibreglass bonnet on my 65 Mustang but imported it that way.  Shelby Mustangs all have fibreglass bonnets and front ends replacing the original metal bonnets, I believe they have a steel support frame, not sure if they all do.

I have seen some fibreglass bonnets that have indentations on the underside about half way along, if I recall correctly, it's so they crumple along these weak points?
