Didnt Consider as being just for having a working test drivetrain, and for celebratory driveway burnouts could always be a bonus👍
Sounds good!

As for those caps, had zero knowledge of uni's till now, and imagine not supposed to fall off if butterfly lands on them. Will "affix" for now, work out later

and... you jinxed me andrew

"That brake booster you have is from a late LX ('77 on) or UC with the solid bent shaft, hopefully the brake pedal you have came from the same otherwise the pin won't line up?"

IMG_1310.jpg

the pedal i got chucked in with the car is from an "straight shaft booster" lh..??

so.. can add an lx or uc auto brake pedal to my list if anyone has one to sell :)
_________
(thought lists were supposed to get shorter as i go..??)

Where do we start ?

The engine mount bolts should not be a problem , (presuming they are the ones that hold the mount to the bracket on the K frame), a local bolts and nuts shop should have a couple that will do the job with a flat and spring washer/s and nuts , not sure what grade they were but they don't really do much and were a bit of overkill considering their size , grade 5 or even 3 should do job for probably less than $10 ?

If you have an existing wiring harness that is in a reasonable condition , meaning that  most have had the fair share of butchering over the years but the basics are

still there then that can be got around when the time comes.

For the trans. cooling lines , just run the rubber tube , pretty sure more than one have done this in past with little trouble.

Should be able to pick up a t-bar shift at reasonable cost these days , just make sure that when you get one that it has the lever on the correct side (some were left some were right ) so you will need to know what side of the trans the shift linkage is on.

Personally i don't know too much about the emission control that LX had but EGR just seemed to be an abortion of a system that fed shit back into the intake to satisfy tail pipe readings and reduce power and increase emissions , the basic principles of PCV and (if fitted) the canister should just  work as basic system without all the other crap that does nothing other than complicate a once simple system of the internal combustion engine ?

Wiring can make your own harness...owning a holden you'll have to learn basic electricals anyway

Might have engine mount bolts if get despo.

Put up ad in WTB section not just here.

I really shouldn't even mention this since you're already running around like a head with it's chook cut off but...

I just spent the last hour or so going through Hardy Spicer catalogs looking for a conversion uni joint from 6 cylinder to V8, but it just wasn't meant to be. Still, it was an interesting exercise!

All Torana 6 cylinders take a 17R series joint, whereas all Torana V8's take a 2R series, both have the same diameter caps (25.4mm) but the 17R is only 43.64mm circlip to circlip, whereas the 2R is 59.53mm.

They make five different conversions from the 17R series, and ten different conversions from the 2R series (including Holden V8 to Ford 9"), but there's none that even come close to converting from a 6 cylinder diff to V8 tailshaft. I guess the difference in strength must be too much?

heya eunuch,

engine bolts am considering sourcing but didn't want to underestimate. will look into

have a six harness, but pretty scrappy and want a fresh 8 one so easier to install and rely upon. ebay about $140 delivered

trans cooler lines... rubber is intent, but just thought put it out there that if metal are available..

have shifter, just need the selector and plate, and the handle too, darn it!

egr's probably going to be blocked off. got the plate for it.

heya gtr,

harness am buying, but think correct about having understanding a good thing.

but one step at a time

..or 19, like i'm attempting at the moment haha

bolts no stress, really. probably more of hassle for you to send than me to source those. as eunuch said just buy decent enough ones and should be fine

and aargh! meant to duplicate and post ad, cheers!

"spent the last hour or so going through Hardy Spicer catalogs looking for a conversion uni joint from 6 cylinder to V8"

muchos gracias for effort and trying andrew!

am starting to think people who have done this conversion just drive around with a six barely sticking in the trans.

(..or replacing rear of diff to an 8/bigger and then able to use v8 tailshaft?)

re: "17R is only 43.64mm circlip to circlip, whereas the 2R is 59.53mm."

hmm, so cant fit standard v8 tail in my diff end(with 6cyl u-bolts), and just call the excess coming out the sides "overkill"??

No I wouldn't recommend it!

Yes the proper way to do it is to swap the yoke on the diff for a V8 one and use a V8 tailshaft, correct length, correct uni joints, all good.

How have you got the car jacked up at the moment? If you have axle stands under the diff then the rear suspension is somewhere near ride-height, but if you were to jack up the body and let the diff hang down, then the 6 cylinder tailshaft may well just fall out of the transmission?

That would be bad, like major damage bad if you're driving down the road at the time, at the very least you would likely bend the tailshaft and flog the hell out of the floor, and that's if you're lucky!

never done before, shock horror!

as easy as changing a spark plug..?

car is jacked on two stands, about a third from front.

now... it would be GREAT if i dropped on floor and found yoke went an inch further in

..and

then i jacked up rear... and let diff/wheels hang...

and found yoke about as in as is now

could get away with that maybe..

though,wishful thinking i suspect ;)

anyways, for another day,

as gtr said, just use as test tailshaft for now, fix later.

as for.. "major damage bad if you're driving down the road at the time.."

yup.

not that i really think it wouldn't bend before sending me ass over tit.

(rightly or wrongly, to me my 6 tailshaft feels like light, flimsy crap to be honest, can't believe they don't twist even under normal load. )

Its actually great you are asking questions.

Even better that you are taking the advice.

There have been some who ask questions, get answers and then do something totally different.

Lots of good stuff being covered here too.

All good , one step at a time , bit by bit , try not to get caught up in trying to think of the system as a working unit because there is a lot of bits that make up the working system , in other words it will come together  :)

no , have not pissed anyone off , it's just the way things are when questions are asked and replies are given , so ask as many questions as you like , there will be many replies concerning what can be done to make things a bit easier...that's the good thing about this place .. :)
