Yep I'd take tank out for good cleanout & squiz at condition inside.

Also take sender unit out to change original sock filter on it.

Then can hit it with some black paint & then tick it off list.

Headers with some pipes aimed at ground work fine just like extractors...rite of passage to start an engine that way!

Years ago my cousin & I fired up a $100 v8 valiant wreck with no wheels sitting on bricks with glass jar as fuel tank...it fired up fine after rusty/blocked muffler blew itself apart

cheers for sender unit and sock info.

didn't know/think how gauge works and wrongly figured only filter was the fuel filter.

have a mate who is planning to buy a hoist with his next tax cheque

have been waiting till then to drop tank and give under the car a proper restore.

(sick of being under the car whilst on jacks. also don't like the uneasy feeling i get doing it either. am most often alone unless daughter coming from uni for a visit.)

"fired up fine.. after" lol

think they were wrong way round in pic . just plonked together to show length

IMG_2054.jpg

anyways, test fitting seems good thankfully

length gets to half way of the trans mount plate.

IMG_2062%201.jpg

on to the drivers side tomorrow.

goss hi-flow mech fuel pump is in the mail, as mines shat itself. got it for $110. asked repco for a price first.. they said $240

so... didn't go with repco.

Not a bad looking pair of extractors, although the trick is making them fit with the steering coupling on the driver's side.

You could've just bought a rebuild kit and done your original fuel pump for about a quarter of that price, not all that hard to do, getting the "peened-in" valves out is about the only tricky part. Anyway, doesn't matter now I suppose.

thanks andrew! hadn't seen anyone else using them in my searches, thought would give em a try. liked the length.

had read drivers side can be a bitch. not looking forward to it, but hopefully goes ok.

already had the original manifold off on pass side, for ease of getting to starter motor earlier..

that's my excuse for not tackling the drivers side anyways!

as for pump, was pretty happy being able to get hi-flow for $110, so am not complaining.

much cheaper for rebuild as you say, which i was unaware was option too. live n learn.

something happy to see

IMG_2082.jpg

annnnnd...

something that made me drool.

IMG_2076a.jpg

as far as i'm concerned, perfect ride height front and rear, wide as rear wheels, a perfect color (a metallic gold, with the slightest tint of green??)

and a number plate to match

Looking good... it's so close now I can almost taste the startup video!

How'd you go with all the electrical stuff?

ran fuel thru a working fuel pump for first time, (off starter motor obviously)

was bloody good to see.

am real real close now andrew!! vid ...soon, i can only gather!

IMG_2092.jpg

am just giving my neighbor a bit of time to recover from op and will have him over again to... start her up!

as for electrics... haven't really touched or cleaned up all grounds etc.

all lights working presently though.

(a little wiggle or two and imagine a few will stop working though. still need to go over all connections and terminals)

will use what best guessed wiring setup is for the hei and.. try to wire her up, too.

suspect is a good thing i elec taped up the coil and haven't hooked up any leads.

now, i don't know what the hell i am doing, but i don't think that was good to see.

rebuild needed i can only gather at moment. will do some research

Nah probably just a stuck needle & seat, not surprising really. Just give that adjustable nut looking thing on the top of the fuel bowl a couple of taps with the handle of a screwdriver or something soft, it may unstick itself?

Or maybe your fancy-pants fuel pump has too much pressure?

Or maybe the float... err... doesn't, which is not uncommon for old Holley carbs?

don't know how fancy it is as only cost $17 more than the stock brand one.

bought it as the threads i looked into said holleys need between 6-7psi, so bought it.

will try your tapping idea first. much appreciated.

as for it being an un-float, will look into.

obviously expected some sort of dilema, as carby is old and sat unused for ...??years

Stuck needle & seat...probably old fuel residue gummed up.

Grab 2 screwdrivers play drums & get all tappity on it around float bowl..

Big screw on side near next fuel line is sight level...unscrew that if fuel keeps pissing out float too high.

a thanks vid (as aren't nearby to shout bourbons.)

i might be the only one who wanted to give ann-marie an internal in the 80's, or i might not be.

anyways, at 12, i was sure willing to give it a darn good try.

I liked Holly better myself, but I wouldn't turn down Teresa either! RIP Jamie Dunn.

Anyway, your float level seems just about perfect now, you may still be up for a carby rebuild in the future but you won't find a more basic carb to work on than a 350 Holley, great thing to learn with.

With a float bowl full of fuel (you don't have to crank), have a look down the barrels and work the throttle, hopefully you will see 2 jets of raw fuel being squirted down the throats, that's the accelerator pump and if that's working then it should be enough to "kick her in the guts (Barry)"?

Can't be much left now, just the timing and plug leads?

forgot about them hotties, i did!

easy for me, brain like a sieve

glad to hear good starter carb to learn on, as do intend on a full rebuild

..and

straight after that i plan to throw "carby" away and go efi !!!! LOL

is there anything more f@#king dangerous! jeez!

seems i am also leaking fuel from between brass fuel fitting and tube/rail !

fires in engine bay much?!

i wonder if i am missing the small gasket?? that goes inbetween that this pic shows

s-l225.jpg

all i have is the larger one,

that i just screwed my fuel fitting

s-l225.jpg

straight into. no gasket.

thought it would "crunch" into place tight.

or maybe i need to take out and clean, as bit of grit not letting it jam tight.

thanks for method, will test fuel squirt in carby first thing!

and.. am hoping to borrow my old neighbor sometime tomorrow to help with leads and timing!

might be a video of me trying to start the car tomorrow! crikey!

"goose"' would be proud i reckon ;)

More of a Terasa fan.The ex looked just like her haha

That fuel line just take it clean out any gunk if there the refit it but make sure metal line is seated properly..you'll feel it if jiggle it.

Then do it up with fingers as much as you can then can nip it up with spanner.

Should be close to firing up by now.

Going injected? What engine?

will redo and jiggle, cheers!

injected, i wish!

that was just a joke

because,  so far..

the combination of me and a carburetted car is..  a leaking and spewing petrol firey deathtrap!!!

money for that sort of surgery is a longgggg way away

next reminiscence and stroll down nostalgia lane..

gail and gillian from wonderworld! hahaha

checked for squirting as you advised andrew

acc pump not ... great.

for a start, seems it's jammed down.

so i slackened off a bolt/spring at REAR that stops acc lever going backwards/releasing to give it  "play". done.

acc pump STILL jammed down tight. (??)

so i loosened acc pump spring and pushed to side

pressing up and down on acc pump lever has no "pressure", freely moves. too freely ..i guess?

(as well as slightest drips of fuel leaking from gasket)

feel like asking santa for one of these

have just been learning about "acc pump cams"

wondering if mine st FAR too high? as in cam really jamming too early

doubt it. but what's causing pump lever to be press fully down even when no throttle being applied.

aargh.

my $100 second hand holley.. might not be worth $2

if anything, it's certainly forced learning hahaha

easy fix? take a pair of pliers to this leaver that runs off the cam and bend it upwards about a cm

IMG_2107.jpg

everyone does it, don't they? lol
