Nice to hear good news mate
To look at id say rocker covers leaking oil on that extractor? Not a head gasket probably at all.

Pretty sure I can see oil bubbling out from rocker cover near the end of the video. I'd take the cover off and check the gasket position and condition. The way I do these gaskets is as follows:-

  1. Thoroughly clean the head and cover surfaces. Inspect the cover for dips and bumps etc. Smooth them out if you have to.
  2. Install the gasket to the cover on the workbench, use the SMALLEST amount of silicone to hold it in place. You can use clips, pegs, clamps, etc to hold it there while the silicone dries overnight.
  3. Paint some permatex sealer on the gasket and install it to the engine.
  4. Tighten the bolts finger tight, starting at the center and work your way out. Watch the cork tabs and make sure they are still poking out.
  5. Re-tighten from the center out but not much, maybe half a turn so that each bolt has a small even amount of clamping force on it.

I had the same trouble with the distributor. Slip it around one tooth. Won't be easy due to clearance back there but can be done with patience. Maybe others can best explain direction required and strategy to keep the rotor in sync with the distributor body and re-setting the timing.

Keep up the good work Mat!

Regards, Steve.

jason and steve, i love your optimism, and i'm gonna run with it!!

(cus i initially think its a head gasket leak dripping on the extractors, turning to rising steam,

and gathering on the oily underneath of rocker cover area and dripping back down)

but as not a single drop of water SEEMINGLY falling to the floor.. i'm sticking with your positive outlook!! will follow all steps steve, and see what changes

and as for dizzy, if ls1taxi is able to get down my way am hoping that notch turn can be achieved maybe, amongst other tinkering.

on lighter side of things..

for the rear windscreen am going to douse the whole rubber in thick dish liquid.. inside ALL grooves.

having the window/rubber not coated made things trickier than needed, as want window to move around inside

(but i did soak the rope in a dish of detergent first. think helped.)

and if you think you can see just a few creases in my roof lining, you are mistaken

for you can see LOTS! lol

(40 yr old rooflining, about as crusty/firm as it gets)

Wow , the fukn TORANA lives , don't worry too much about "teething problems" , shit happens , not being an xpert , try a bit of water

soluble oil and a soft brush too "soften up" that 40 year old lining after using a cheap shit trigger pack to spray it on , but be gentle,It is called cutting oil that is used to cool off cutting tools when machining metal , works well on rubber and other things.

well done :)

yay , another 2 fitty 3 lives.

Yep looks like leaking out rocker cover onto no.6 pipe

Bit of gasket goo should do it...those soft tinny chrome covers probably need a few heat cycles to settle down.

If it still leaks after that try track down some factory rocker cover bolts & spacers as they seat in better.

Had issue like that with leaking sump with silly aftermarket bolts leaking through under head.

When it annoys walk away...come back tomorrow lol

cheers gtr, will do some gasket work as you and koala advise. fingers crossed sorts it out.

i thought my bolts and spacers(funny looking washers??) were "stock".  ??

not that i'd know. just assumed.

(i havent seen any oil/liquid dropping onto extractors..

well, ..that is.. until steam/smoke has been going for a while,

and then seemingly collecting underneath rocker cover, and then dripping.

always the pessimist.

has anyone ever talked themselves into doing a head gasket? or do i stand a good chance of being the first?

don't answer that ;)

will attack rocker cover!.)

definitely go the rocker cover option first,,

much easier option with less cost,

if that fails then look further

To me looks like oil coming out near gasket tab pokes out rocker cover...can see black mark above bolt & plug lead.

Could be the pic or colouring, thought factory bolts have markings inside head face & also different shape underneath head to normal...easy fix anyway.

A headgasket would be leaking much lower than that & oil be dripping other areas :spoton:

well, what do you have to say for yourselves!

yes mangled it u did. Hope this time u didn't tighten it that much.

So glad it wasn't your head gasket. I would never of lived down that jinx on u haha.

Very glad to see that issue over.
Now run it until the fans kick in and check transmission level.
Once u can get it in gear I expect a nice smoking rubber clip lol.

no jinx jas!!!!

just workmanship lol

hmm. what's tightened TOO much?

aargh! may of.

that said... i never put the thing on "straight" the first time!

fan kicks in :)

still, need a temp and oil guage.

my units are VB comm "senders".. and actually seem to work like "gauges".

(as in they dim and brighten here and there.)

hoping can leave them in.. and install this, or something alike

s-l225.jpg

as in just tap out of wires existing.. and run to these wires ??

is that how it works?

anyways, bought brake fluid last night to do brakes, but didn't buy trans fluid.

will get some soon hopefully

smoking rubber (or even MOVING!!) video clip posted soon i hope!

thanks you fellars! i HAVE just done a burnout in my TORANA!!!

----------------

my console/shift rod is out of position.

says in neutral when is in reverse.

console jammed back as far as it can go.

can it be that my shift rod is not right/or shifter position.

mixture of all? darn it.

Awesome so glad for you that u have sorted them small issues out.

As for gauges I'd buy with the senders.
Different company's use Different senders. The ones u have most likely won't match just the gauges.
Thread size is generic through most senders. May just need an adaptor or 2 to reduce to the smaller ones..

Great work nearly roadworthy time and cruising down the highway.

I reckon it will be easier to run new wires to the gauges. If you wanted to tap into the factory wires it would mean pulling the instrument cluster out and finding which wires to cut and extend, then if you ever find an SL/R cluster it won't work cause you cut the wires!

Another thing I was going to say is that it isn't a bad idea to keep the oil pressure light in the dash working if possible, even people who claim to watch their gauges carefully get caught out not noticing a loss of oil pressure straight away (I speak from personal experience).

You would need to buy a T-piece and the correct oil switch for the light but for the small extra cost it's well worth it in my opinion.

As for the shifter, you will likely need to adjust the length of the rod that connects the shifter to the trans (under the car), I'd GUESS it needs to be slightly longer, hopefully one end has a threaded nut/pin type deal, just disconnect, thread out a few turns, put it back and try again?

P.S. I know it's exciting 'n all, but I wouldn't go doing anything too silly (like burnouts) until you at least know the timing is spot on. Plus you need to bear in mind that although you warm up the engine and trans to some extent, the diff will still be stone cold. Back in my misspent youth/speedway days I saw many a cold Holden Banjo lunch itself, I remember one guy didn't even make it off the car trailer!

BTW, did you ever check the oil level in the diff?

heya andrew,

was just going to run new/add an extra wire/s from "sensors", to the guages, and leave existing wires/"lights" also.

don't understand what you mean by "t piece", as (wrongly?)

was just gonna screw in the new sensor that comes with the guages, and not get a "switch" sensor.

(just keep the instrument lamps working as "gauges" , that dim/brighten, as they do right now)

as for shifter.. seeing as the car was auto, and i mounted the console brackets, i may of not set them right, in position.

am going to loosen rod, and try to push shifter forward a cm (after loosening it's bolts)

TRYING not to be too silly.

were half hearted burnouts with very few revs, as suspected not too good an idea to preasure it too much. on gravel as well.

um, diff oil????

He meant 'oil pressure switch t piece' thread it into oil pump then 2 oil senders so you can still use factory idiot light & aftermarket guage.

Sounds like need to re-adjust rod for shifter...put shifter in park then from underneath undo adjuster & make sure bracket on auto shaft all the way to rear then tighten adjuster.

Check car only starts in Park & Neutral...not in gears lol.

2 tips:

Bad habit to leave aircleaner on carby stud like that...can come loose & fall into carby

Rocker cover gasket can be used to hold gasket sealed into rocker cover so it doesn't move.out of plce when flipped over onto heads.

It's not a burnout untill fire brigade is called or banjo goes bango...
