hahaha am starting to think if i ever plan to drive her i should get mega full tow coverage with racv too
and yep, rolls.
boo!!

Just to clarify, when you say you "extended the rod" do you mean the round rod that links the shifter to the trans?
That would change the distance between the two but not the travel, I'd think it's the length of the lever itself (the flat bar that sticks out the bottom of the shifter, that the rod connects to) that would be the problem?
Posted 09 February 2018 - 01:20 PM
yes the rod was extended.
not the shiter's underside/lever.
the "throw".. (caused by both the shifter and/or the trimatics "levers") seems perfect now.
it's real close to being right now. did it by myself going under car and back in car and under again and.. etc etc
not practical. when take to mechanics and chuck on a hoist we'll be able to fine tune it perfectly.
(i HOPE. be nice to have a car that "parks")
Posted 09 February 2018 - 10:27 PM
You'll get there eventually dude...keep at it.
When clicked into Park should be able to rock it to lock...if doesnt means someone been jamming it into Park whilst rolling lol.
Supposedly simple fix if know how to get into the auto although only heard of it happen never actually had one do that.
Might be good excuse to give that ol' trimatic proper service.
Posted 10 February 2018 - 08:28 AM
my plan is to send it back to the mechanics to get the rear brake cylinders replaced and all bled again,
and i bought a trimatic service kit already, and i'll get him to do that as well.
and HOPEFULLY he's aware it indeed may be a simple fix and charges as such
is a tad odd, though.
i don't recall it not locking (wheels) into park before i sent it to him. oh well, who knows.
will await more tinkering and servicing.
and getting him to check if the tailshaft "flange"? is still leaking,
or if it was a matter of "torque converter over-full".. or something,
can't remember exactly what he said.
He did say it's not a big issue to get to/fix, though. yay!

if anyone has any thoughts please let me know.
as after reading threads i am still a little unsure.
as one of my globes is blown, i want to replace it.. and i have read that it is best to update to H4 globes.
which requires "a connector"/alteration (?)
is this all i need.. or do i still need the "connector" ??
https://www.ebay.com...m4383.l4275.c10
Posted 10 February 2018 - 02:32 PM
The H4 conversion is a straight bolt-in job if you only run 60/55W bulbs, anything better will require a wiring upgrade (adding relays, thicker wire, better earths, etc.).
There are a few different types of kits with regard to the little park light globe, some have a hole in the lens that needs to be plugged (like in your picture), some have a clear section in the reflector to let light shine through from the back (from the standard Torana all-in-one connector for example), and some have no provision for a park light at all.
I've noticed the different brands have different beam patterns too, the last pair I bought were Narva and their light pattern on the road was completely different to the ones they replaced (which I can't remember the brand of), and then there are "Angel Eyes" but I've never had them so not sure how they stack up (if they're even legal).
And nowadays you can get them with a ring of white LEDs for the park lights too, and of course if you're really determined to attract the attention of the law... go RGB!

I reckon it would make the roos run!!
Posted 10 February 2018 - 05:18 PM
have never come across a roo laurie, must be in the wrong part of country,
and lucky, stuff that added road obstacle!!
and will be sticking with the 60/55W bulbs for now andrew. less hassle from what you've written, cheers!
and supposedly a marked improvement on the originals. and haven't driven at night yet so aren't used to any beam pattern.
funny you mention the angel eyes... have had these saved in ebay watchlist for years but unsure if want to go in that direction
not that i thought of the legalities when pondering.
(figured??.. bmw run them.. so...)

love this new pic!
but it is deceiving. in it you can't see the bad body work.. well, everywhere, and the many paint runs.
i love her all the same though
over the years maybe i will attack a panel at a time and correct my bad workmanship, but at a more leisurely and careful pace.

~ and the many paint runs. ~
Known in the trade as a "signature" (all decent artists sign their work after all).
You'll have to grab some Autosol and apply some elbow grease to those wheels now too, that should keep you busy for a few days!
Also while you have the black paint handy, do you want to "paint" the rubber strips onto the bumpers? I've seen a few now that were painted on and you wouldn't tell the difference from a distance.
EDIT: BTW, did you ever get it wheel aligned? Looks like a fair amount of camber on that front wheel...

just tore apart dash and got speedo cable attached properly finally, lubricated it and it fed in nicely this time.
so.. took for a cruise with a satnav to check speed.
when doing 60 the car says 80.
was well warned going to be the case by you guys with my missmatched engine/trans and diff.
just checked thru my photos and this is what i have at the moment

Count teeth for both gears write them down...work out percentage speedo is out by then work out if need more or less.
Do search on here think even I've posted about speedo gears here somewhere.
Can also work out what revs your doing with rear tyre size & diff gear with online speedo calculator too.

Is red 23 tooth & white 20 tooth?
Posted 16 February 2018 - 05:05 PM
If you let me know your rear tyre size and diff ratio (or the "RR AXLE" code off the body plate if it's the original diff) then I'll crunch the numbers for ya?
Not sure what colour that drive gear is (inside the trans)? It looks kinda greenish in the photo but as far as I know the only options are Red (7 teeth), White (8), Blue (9) & Yellow (10), can you confirm which it is?
Posted 16 February 2018 - 05:45 PM
heya gtr and andrew, looked for the speedo info previously posted, but couldn't find amongst the whopping 43 pages!
yes, the red one is 23 tooth,
not sure about the presently on white one, but has less that's for sure.
not really sure how many teeth in the trans one either.
??6
the tyre is 245/60, and the original/present diff is GV4, going by the i.d. plate.
and going by that photo andrew, is somehow?? but definitely green.
(photo's are old ones when had the cable out.)
it's not the end of the world, as will be mounting a gps in the car, but would be nice to have the speedo showing roughly accurate speed and help always needed (sadfly!) and appreciated!
-----------------------------
google searches of info, how accurate am unsure
https://www.aussiev8...eedo-gears.html
"Hj parts book shows
dark blue 22 teeth for 3.55 ratio
yellow 24 teeth for 3.90 ratio
green 21 teeth for 4.44 ratio but you also must run the different driven gear inside
the gearbox for that one to read right."
"dont go off the holden book cause tyre size affects it. what ive got in mine with 3.55's is 100% accurate but doesnt match up with what the holden book says"
and here is a pic of example trans drive gears from same site/page

Assuming 245/60R14 (?) and it still has the GV4 diff (3.36:1), then the only way your old gears make sense is if the drive gear (trans) is yellow (10 teeth)...
If the driven gear (cable) was white (20 teeth) then your speedo should've been reading 31.61% fast (so 60km/h = 79km/h reading), which sounds like what your GPS suggested.
If you swap to the red (23 teeth) your speedo will still read fast, but by only 14.44% (so 60km/h = 69km/h reading, or 100km/h = 115km/h reading)
The closest you will get with that yellow drive gear will be a Light Blue (25 teeth) driven gear (Rare Spares Part # SG1013) but that will still read 5.29% fast (so 60km/h = 63km/h reading, or 100km/h = 105km/h reading)
If you want to get it any closer you'll need to pull the rear extension housing off the trans and swap the drive gears, the closest combination would be a White (8 teeth) drive gear (Rare Spares Part # SG1000) and a Green (21 teeth) driven gear (Rare Spares Part # SG1008) which gives you a speedo reading of +0.27% (so 60km/h reads 60.2)

Need to be bit more specific dude... eg 245/60/15 3.36 diff gears then gear teeth numbers.
Try this link out

Light Blue (25 teeth) reading 5.29% fast so 60km/h = 63km/h reading
...sounds fine to me!
not tearing apart to make perfect, would cause more problems than solve knowing me lol
and it can't be yellow?? going by that pic of it inside my car, and that lineup pic of them all together.. it is only a LOW /7 or 8( not a 9 or 10 surely?)
and gtr, i can't be sure of the inner trans gear teeth, though it looks like 6 to me. lol
??
love that link! if i can count the inner properly i will be able to do the maths myself! whoda thunk it!
bare with me fellers, will get onto it and let know results.
positive hopefully
---------------
someone else is having the same problem as me!
Definitely green. It is just an ordinary V8 Trimatic, electric kickdown, left side shifter. I believe it was in a VB 253 Commodore.
bloody commodores! lol

You don't count teeth across the gear, you have to count how many teeth are around one edge, where each tooth starts, by turning the driveshaft exactly one turn.
I've never seen a green drive gear before, we definitely need to have an accurate tooth-count from that green drive gear, I'm hoping it has the same number as one of the others just tinted a different colour?
BTW, if that green gear has a different number of teeth then all my calculations above will be out.
Also can you confirm the tyre size is 14" or 15"?

ah, NOT across. cheers!
and if can use my neighbors new hoist.. i'll see if can put a texta mark on a tooth and spin rears while holding the camera phone up against hole to take a vid and count the teeth. if can... then we are in business!
