Merry Christmas all,

Im in the market for a new battery operated rattle gun after some low life scum lifted mine from my boot when I stopped to help a breakdown.

My original was an 18V Bosch that did the job really well, but as it was 20 months or so old Im sure technology has moved on.

So any ideas about the latest and greatest would be appreciatted.

Its for home use.

Cheers Brian

Well do you have other bosch batteries/tools? If you do i'd just buy the latest bosch skin. If not, Milwaukee make some great products. Their big rattle gun is plenty powerful, but can be a bit heavy. They also have a smaller one the size of an impact driver, but its a 1/2" socket drive. That's pretty powerful too and will easily do wheel nuts. The only real advancement these days is probably the brushless motors. I would suggest a 4.0ah battery if you didnt already have one.

If you want to stay on the cheap side buy a 1/2" ryobi impact gun. Its pretty cheap and plenty of power does my hilux wheel nuts without a problem.

We use Bosch onsite at work they are given a fair flogging by the fitters and hold up well. There are replacement brushes readily available and cheap.

Agre with Jacob, if you have the batteries and charger just get anothr bosch skin..... They are pretty cheap compared to having to buy another charger and batteries.

I have quite a few of the bosch 18v range, they are great tools, but i only use them for light home use...

Brushless Milwaukee gear is fantastic, been using them at work for a few months and can't fault them.

I bought a Milwaukee set, grinder, drill, small 1/2" impact gun about 12 months ago after using some on a job.

The impact gun onsite was the larger one & they are heavy especially when used with extended arm as we were uncrating container size packing crates!

But grunt galore! It snapped several 16mm stainless bolts!! (that then taught the kids how to remove broken bolts ! HAHAHA)

I bought my set to replace an old ryobi 18v drill (stuffed batteries & wobbly chuck) & to get the grinder & rattler!

The little rattle gun gun struggles with tight wheel nuts! Less than 50% success recently on tight but lubed wheel nuts.  :(

Am abit disapointed with it on wheels but for general stuff its ok!

Grinder & drill are brilliant!

Have a look at Sydney tools. i bought my set from there delivered with a bag cheaper than i found over here!

Oh i now charge the batteries monthly & dont leave them on the drill etc in an attempt to make them last longer as i think lack of use killed the ryobi ones as they were almost always flat when i wanted it !

I've had my Hitachi 1/2" rattle gun for over 5 years now, I'm a diesel fitter so it gets a hidding, lived in my tool bag the hole time, been wet heaps, dropped several time off 2500 digger, CAT 785 trucks and still goes. They haven't got as much balls as the bigger ones like Milwalkie etc but are smaller and get into tighter spots so can use them more often. You should never trust any rattle gun that it has done up a bolt tight enough, seen many guy's come unstuck doing this over the years.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, the scum bag that stole mine took the case so both batteries and charger are gone. Im after something that will primarily undo car wheel nuts first and foremost followed by suspension engine mounts and other rattle gun type stuff etc.

Mark I haven't really looked at Hitachi - what model is yours (nothing like a recommendation from someone who has used one in anger).

Dattoman, does that thing really work? I have never heard of them.

Cheers Brian

Mines an old 18 volt job with the 3ah battery that pushes up into the handle, the newer models are 4ah or more and battery slides in from the front.
They will still undo car and 4WD wheel nuts ok, use mine on Hilux and cruisers all the time. Most fitters I've come across use Hitachi.

Yup works a treat

Handy at the track for changing wheels for transport

I've been using it abit in the shed for pulling engines apart too

I must admit I bought it cheap on clearance and the normal price is alot more than it should be

I actually bought 5 of them @$75 each. Sold 4 off which more than paid for mine. :)

I use the ryobi 13mm drill, impact driver, rattle gun and angle grinder as an auto sparky, and they hold up really well and perform great for the price! Rattle gun will whip off alternator pulley nuts on big truck alts no problem, which is the reason I got it. two 4.0ah batteries and a 1.5Ah battery hold up well.

All my cordless gear is Dewalt XRP stuff (including a ½" drive rattle gun) and I couldn't be happier, it's been dropped from great heights, under water several times, kicked around in the dirt & mud and it's still going strong.

and a Happy New Year Brian too,

So Datto's Gun has 450nm,

which is the key for rattling power,

so make sure you get 450nm at least in your Gun, so those wheel nuts come off.

Like-wise, we need reliability, which this thread is great for comparisons.   :spoton:

I'll be in the market for one but never had one before so dont know much about them.

Milwaukee and Dewalt stuff have always been good but cost a fortune.

I'm just after something that will give me the most bang for buck while being reliable when needed.
