Carby spacer question

Hey guys I've had my engine dyno with a 1 inch spacer with a dual plane manifold , put the engine in the car and have bonnet clearance issues ... Can't I take the spacer off and will the engine still run fine ?

Providing it's just a spacer and not an adapter it should be okay but you will probably have to swap out the studs for shorter ones as well.

 

Once you get the spacer off, sit the carby on the manifold and make sure the throttle butterflies and linkages don't foul on anything, you don't want to find out they bind on full throttle during the test drive!

 

You will probably drop a couple of horses from what the dyno said due to the slightly reduced intake runner volume but such is life.

Hi Ryan. New member, however lots of experience with Torana bonnet clearance issue's. If you haven't already solved your problem I used to cut the base (downward flange), off the air cleaner. This would usually provide 15-20 mm extra clearance without upsetting the intake set up. You never have much clearance in a Torana to begin with. The underside of my bonnet used to show the markings from the various air cleaners I tried. As Andrew stated it is important to establish whether it is an adaptor or spacer. If it's an adaptor then a change to the correct base carb will automatically provide you with the clearance. A dual-plane manifold usually provides more low-down torque and driveability, where as spacers usually assist with higher rpm power (I did say usually). I am interested to know what you are using in your set up? Regards, Scott

Hey Scott thanks for reply I have ended up running no spacer which flowcraft supplied while doing engine dyno, engine is scat 355 vn heads , 286 crane cam , harrop dual plane , 750 hp carby ,402 hp and 425 ft torque

I took spacer which was 1 inch off and ran a 1 inch drop base with 3 inch filter x 14

Thats worked out well. Sounds like you have a good balance with very good power thats useable and driveable on the street. What you lost with the spacer (if any), should be better for street use. Them putting the spacer on sounds a little bit like Macca's on-selling - "do you want fries with that? You probably don't need it, but the offer makes you think you do! Did they alter the carb specs from standard during the dyno tuning?

air cleaner out of the bonnet looks rude IMO  , im gonna call dyno shop to see if its cool with not running spacer after everything was tuned with it on
