Hi all,

Will both 9 and 12 port heads fit onto a 3.3L 6 cylinder out of a VK Commodore without any modifications.

Thanks

Hi Glenn,

You will need to drill and protect the block from metal material,

for the 9 port water jacket holes being drilled into the 3.3,

using a 9 port head gasket as a template.

The 3.3 water jacket holes will be covered by the 9 port head gasket.  :D

Hi all,

Will both 9 and 12 port heads fit onto a 3.3L 6 cylinder. - Yes.

Thanks

Thanks for that Dave. So I need to drill the 3.3 block right? Should I weld the 12 port head holes in the 3.3 block or is it fine to cover them with the head gasket. Water leaks?

Also, while your here. Will 202 pistons fit into a 3.3 Blue block. And I assume the 202 had the 9 port head.

The gasket will seal OK as this mod has been done already.

and a very good question about the pistons, as I will guess and say, all pistons will fit the bore diameters suited.

so a 202 bore is the same as a 3.3 standard

Have a look at holden six cylinder head 101 thread in engine, has all you need to know.

202 and 3.3 pistons are sameness PROVIDING THE ENGINES ARE THE SAME OVERBOREs, but you will want to keep the blue/black rods.

Thats good Bomber, thanks for that.

I shouldn't need to worry about my push rod lengths ect should I, I was just going to take everything out of my 186 and put it into the 3.3. The only thing I should have to do is drill those holes right?

You will use the pushrods to suilt whichever cylidner head you use.

Sorry to sound dumb, but if Im using my 9 port head and my 3.3 block can I use my push rods out of my 186.

That would imply your using the pushrods to suilt whichever cylinder head you use....IE yes, the 186 ones.

Definitely the smarter way to go.

You asked above about welding up the holes, well firstly you wouldn't weld them, drill and tap them and fit a grub screw would be a lot better, but I see no need. In the Holden six cylinder head 101 thread i put a fair few picks up of the differences. Whether you drill the block or the head depends on what gasket you get IMO. Generally it would be better to drill the head if the block is a complete short assembly, as metal filings will be easyer to remove from a cylidner head than from a short motor.

Cheers.

Is it often done this way ?

I have only seen tutorials for drilling the block.

If you have both parts in front of you, im pretty sure you will find there is little difference.

I could imagine making a 3.3 block match the 9 port 202 head water jacket holes,

or the 202 block matching the 3.3 head water jacket holes,

by making either head water jacket holes match their final destination.

I am learning too. :furious:

but if we can do the reverse, that will be great news. :clappin:
