Hi I understand this is not specifically Torana related but some people on here have surely played around with early Commodores.

The wipers have stopped working in my VK. I pulled the assembly of motor and arms out and cleaned up all earth contact points, cleaned the plug terminals and put it back together -  and it worked.

But now it has stopped again. Before I pull out a multimeter and start looking for electrical faults, can anyone point me in the direction of common faults?

If the motor itself has worn out, what is needed to rebuild it? Are the wiper motors interchangeable with those out of later model Commodores?

Any advice appreciated.

If the motor is worn out, most likely brushes and com, it will need an overhaul. They can be fiddly and best left to an auto electrician who still does rebuilds. If the motor is burnt out (due to age or stiff linkages/excessive operation on dry glass) it will need to be rewound most likely and this is getting expensive. Unsure if the 1st gen commodores all used the same sheet metal in the scuttle and the same wiper motor/setup, you will need to suss this out at a wrecker or something. Also ring a parts place and enquire about a wiper motor for one and see if the part number is different from VB thru to VL. tap the motor while wiper switch is ON and ignition is on and see if the wipers start again. Common faults other than the motor would be the switch, the connector for the combination switch at the bottom of the column, check the pins for any burning, and also stiff linkages, so inspect ALL pivoting and rotating parts in the linkage assemby for binding and ease of movement. Stiff wiper linkages can burn out the motor. Check the fuse box, make sure the fuse holder is good and not burnt out.

VB VC VH VK VL wiper motors are all the same.

You can pick up a working used one on ebay for around $50.00.

Your windscreen wiper arms are too tight to the windscreen. Squirt some oil on the screen and see if they loosen up?

Haha cheers Rob.

I did see that and couldn't believe he was in a VK Commo. Not a bad coincidence haha.

Checked the fuses again and it had popped one so replaced that and they are working again now. I believe it may just have been a bad earth that caused it. Hopefully I've cleaned it up adequately now.

if you have a popped fuse for the wipers it could be overdrawing, just double check that your wiper linkages arent binding
