Hi all,

I am putting all my 186 parts onto a 3.3L blue block. I am using the blue crank and pistons, but Im wondering if I can use my 186 cam. It is after market street/race spec.

Thanks

From my experience, a wild 186 cam will seem pretty tame in a 202. I reckon about 10deg@50 more needed for the extra stroke

Ok thanks, I'll have to look into that.

Std one is fibre cam gear
Preferred is alloy cam gear
The crank is steel regardless

Don't use straight cut

and don't try to mix and match imperial and metric gear pitch,if they still make both?

ie,make sure the gears are a set...new or used.

Make sure it isn't actually a  proper 186 cam or the 202 rod bolts will hit the cam. Has to be a cam designed for a 202 to fit in a 202, which most aftermarket cams have been since the 70's.

TMK all aftermarket alloy cam timing gears are the same for 138, 149, 161, 173, 179, 186, 202. Note: Straight cut timing gears not included.

Thanks Dave , it was just something a railway mechanic said to me thirty years ago , about the late ones being different , and it is one of the things I never forgot .

I don't know if Red, Blue & Black genuine GMH cam gears are the same so they may be a different kettle of fish to aftermarket gears.

They look the same at a quick glance, though i've never actually thought to check them really closely, and all the stock cams i've come across that had fibre gears on them are currently in landfill so cant check....

Cheers.

I had a missus with straight cut gears once.

Ended up getting some earplugs.

I ran alloy straight cuts on my old boat 202....couldn't hear anything offensive (but in the boat the engine is mounted backwards so the crank gear was constantly covered in oil so I assumed this quietened it down?)

It sounded nothing like other straight cuts I've heard...
