Anything wrong with a grub screw as a scotch lock like i usually use and Jonesy used?

Not that I know of. People have been using them successfully for decades. The only possible downside I can see would be if you were experimenting with offset keys or testing different several camshafts. In those cases you'd be better off with a washer and bolt but otherwise the scotch key is easy and very secure.

and for balance purpose,

like Jonesy has, the Scotch key is opposite to the woodruff key.

Ah i get warrens post properly now, he runs a bolt in the middle of the camshaft....For some reason i thought he was using a bolt in the location of the scotch lock, was thinking there may have been something flash with the head of the bolt tensioning the threads and providing a lock or similar......

Ignore me......

Think about it Dave. The key fills the space machined out to take the key. And the Scotch key fills the hole drilled to take the Scotch key. Where have we added or subtracted any material?

I just thought of why I said it Oldjohnno,

the Woodruff Key is steel, and the Gear is alloy, so the Scotch Key would be steel counterbalancing it. :)

I know, I know, I know, only minutes of gram's, but was the thought.
