Just thought I'd start a thread on information on what welders people have and like to use and any info that they could recommend to people who have little knowledge and or purchasing one.

I am interested to get some feedback and info on mig welders as I'm about to purchase one.
I want a single phase mig welder and it will only be used for smaller jobs like working on the car.. What do you recommend?

Thanks,

id recommend a trusted brand name from your local supplier,

avoid ebay cheap ones, there not worth the hassles of returning them, and your local shops dont have consumables for them,

brands i would buy in no particular order,

cigweld, unimig, boc,kemppi

ones to avoid

rossi, mishto,weldsmart,proweld

I have used most brands ..  Lincoln, Cig, Unimig, MigoMag .. and others that i can't remember..  But the best welders I have ever used were WIA (Welding Industries Australia)  they are not cheap, but they do not breakdown, well not in my experience anyway.  I have used these machines on a nonstop basis using 1.6 wire to weld pick holders to cutting barrels, to using  0.6 wire for the odd foreign order  :)....   I thought they were that good, that when I started working for myself, I bought a WIA welder.    As said in other threads about welding, you need to buy the one one that suits your needs, if your going to do thin metal, there is a lot off on/off trigger work being done, and some welders I have used for this leave the welds unshielded by the gas, because the solenoid action is to slow, and the arc goes off before the gas...  if that makes any sense..   I guess all the top brand welders offer quite a lot nowdays...  But for sales, service and spares availability I could recommend no one better that WIA..

Here's a link to their webpage .... Check em out. they have every thing you'l ever need for what ever job your doing .  Cheers Ian..

WIA for me too.

I can't fault it.

Yes ......... they cost more. But you really do get what you pay for.

Something 150A or better will suit your needs.

cant say i have heard of them but looks ok.

not a fan of multi units myself though.

google them and see what you can find out about them from people using them first.

Have used a friends 400A Cebora on many jobs including panel work.

Does a great job on anything that you use it on.

Its one of his collection of machines.

He has an old CIG 240V machine that still gives great service as well.

Lincoln power mig 180c is the one I use. It's unreal once you get it setup.

Do lots of practice welds.

Fiddle with the settings to see how they change things.

Make sure everything is as clean as possible before welding.

Dont weld too long in the one area.

Get your head close enough to see what the weld puddle is doing. And keep watching it.

I've got the lincoln 250s and have found it a good performer,  I'd also suggest checking into buying a gas bottle outright from gasweld rather than paying bottle rent and get yourself a good auto darkening helmet if you haven't already got one.

I went with a  3M speedglas job,
