Does anyone know how you can check if an engine is either stolen or registered in another car?

I want to buy an engine and want to make sure it's OK before going to the trouble and expense of rebuilding and fitting.

The RMS need a VIN and engine number, apparently can't check just an engine on it's own.

Even if the police check and comes back as not stolen, it is only means not reported stolen, which would not help if the engine number has been used on another engine(re-stamped).

There must be some way of checking this, I don't want any headaches down the track when blueslipping the car.

May be you just need to talk to the right person, anyone

Hi Lee....just done this last week.
I was purchasing a block for my torry so all i done was ring the RMS and asked if i could get an engine number checked for a replacement block I was buying....told the lady I want to cover my bum before purchasing.
She asked me the number and ran a check over the phone....RMS told me it was out of a torana and that it came up clean....no problems....all she would say was that the particular engine number I gave her was safely in retirement.....no specific details were given about the owner or vehicle it came out of.
So its all good I said to her...she replied yep all good.

Thanks for that, somewhat restores my faith in the system,  didn't catch her name by chance, did you ring the general enquiry number?

When revs checks were free I used to just ring up and quote the chassis number off my everyday drive car or off another car i'd wrecked and scrapped that i'd actually owned and had last been regoed in my name. I'd give them that chassis number and the 307 or 308 or 327 or 350M or whatever number was on the engine I was looking at. If it came up as no Police interest and I got a receipt with it I was happy.

Today i'd just go to a Police station and ask them to check the number for you. If it is a Chev check it with the GMH part alone and also with the GMH part and the engine plant part combined. If all good get a receipt from the seller with their name, address and licence number on it.

Just for your own safety I'm fairly sure you have to inform the person you're recording prior to doing so these days......

You can do an online search for a fee, here.

Or get the seller to provide a stat dec, declaring it's all good with a record of engine numbers along with his license details.

Last time I enquired with RMS in nsw about this they said it would have to be done through freedom of information which costs you. But I suspect if you get the right person on the phone they can probably give you some info.
