There is an extension lead on the motor.. pic is decieving.

if u look there are two plugs inside the case.. one is for neg and the other is for pos... doesnt matter which way to test but have to get right on assembly to run correct way.

The motor itself is isolated form any current and only connected via the two plugs

Clark Rubber.. The open pored foam is AIRCONDITIONER foam and the gaskets are as close a match as I could get to the original gaskets.. dont get the really heavy rubber, go for the lighter 6mm one as it compressors better..

Do you seal the rubber with anything when fitting the box back in the car, Mike?

I havnt got that far yet..

Ive pulled a few of these cars apart and as far as I can tell..Originally there was no extra sealer on the rubbers.. Ill probally just use a bit of the strip caulk on the vent in only.. and ALL bolts/screws, etc..

Hi Mike

Probably a trivial thing but with all the Heater boxes you have done have you seen any markings on them?(date codes and some sort of inspection code)

I have seen a few different types whether they were made at different places or not who knows??

A couple of pics of 2 different ones I have seen.

Cheers Dane

Dane,

do you recon that this mark is an " engine bay inspection date" or a completion date on assembly line ?

It just seems weird that you would stamp a heater box as it's just a component of the engine.

could it be that the " total of all the other marks in the engine bay " result in this final  stamp ?

just a thought - i have absolutely no evidence of this

g

Only marks I seen were some texta in black on the inside of the LJ one, cant remember what it was. Ill look next time I open as it needs sealing...

No white writing, then again the heater boxes I fixed were pretty weathered...

Thanks Mike

Hi Grant

I would be assuming that theses marking and date codes would of been stamped on there prior to fitting and installing to the car, each component that's in the engine bay for example sake has their own date code to when they were made not fitted to the car.

Just my thoughts

cheers Dane

This is an insanely helpful thread. Thank you!
Question, did you buy new fixings? Referring mainly to the 3 long Coach bolts. If so where did your purchase? I’ve had a hard time trying to find them. Bolt places tell me I won’t have any luck. Will need the clips too.

Cheers,

Brent

Inspection date was done on final inspection of vehicle that's why the stamp is upside down.

The white grease is typically a Zinc Oxide grease.

What is zinc oxide grease used for?

It can be used as a multi-purpose grease for many applications (up to 110oC). It protects moving parts against wear from shock loads in high load service conditions. Zinc Oxide Grease prevents scuffing and further assists in wear prevention due to the high performance EP additives.

Thanks Dave. I was just reading about lithium grease, this could also be an option. I have a mate who used to work for Castrol selling lubricants, I am waiting for him to call me back also.

Cheers

I had my heaterbox done by a fella on this forum, he did a great job

he had stickers made up to go on heater fan motor and also got  a

Inspection stamp made up to stamp some white ink on side of heater box

so i picked a date that would match my car and as a personal Touch

i had My Initials Added as being the inspector that gave it the OK

Thats the third type of insp stamp I've seen.  Alway thought this was the inspection date of the heater box but makes sense that it is the vehicle inspection date.  Thinking about it the heater inspection date is actually on the fan motor.  BTW the first pic (25-5-73) is off a trentham built LJ.

So this begs the question which final inspection stamp was Acacia and which was Elizabeth?  I know which is Trentham.

I have a new batch of the heater box fan motor Smith's decals now available if anyone wants one or some. Just pm me.

As for the inspection stamps on the heater box there's quite a variety of them. Pre 73 cars tend to be on the side of the heater box near the wiper motor and are usually upside down but I have also seen them stamped vertically. Sometime around 73 they started stamping them on the front of the heater box and still upside down. My assumption is that since the stamps tend to be upside down that they were probably done when the heater box was upside down on a bench as that's how a completed heater box would sit the flatest due to the fan motor making it unstable when it's the correct side up. If it was an inspection stamp for when the car was completed then I can't see why they tend to be upside down.

Early examples are
INSP 74
1-MAR-72 as an example. They seem to have INSP followed by a 2 digit number. On the early ones the date is written with the month as abbreviated letters ie 1-MAR-72 etc.
By 1973 the format had changed. As an example I've seen
INSP SR
11-7-73
I've also seen SR on a 74 stamp which was
INSP SR
22-1-74.

Recently 2 NOS heater box tops went to auction. They didn't have these stamps but had the part number from the parts catalogue hand written on them in white.
