G'day guys, I'm new here,

I stumbled onto this Forum a couple of years back, thought I'd joined or posted etc, but can't see anything in the pages.

I have lived on the Flurieu penninsular (where Mc Laren vale is situated) pretty well all my life, (I'm a 55 model).

As a poor but happy 16 year old, Reeves Garage, (owned by the Bosworth family) was my local Holden dealer and I

bought 4 cars from them.

As one of the local petrol heads / enthusiasts, I spent lots of time hanging around there, it was the place to go to

meet up with your mates. I knew the owners, the salemen, the secretary, the machanics, and the apprentices.

One of those apprentices was my best man when I got married and I was his.

He, and another mate literally biult the 2 LJ V8s that came out of that dealership, and my best man, had actually picked up the third car from City State Holden and it was sitting on the workshop floor ready for dismantle when the 'news' came from the owner (John Bosworth) that they had been told by GMH not to biuld any more or risk loosing their Dealership.

Now, just to clear a few things up....................

The first car from Reeves was an Orange 2 door 'S'.

It was a demo that all and sundry drove, for a short time. (tyres didn't last long)

Kingsley Mills, a local biulder and staunch Ford man. A G.T. owner, who bought his petrol from the Reeves bowsers, had been persuaded to take the car for a drive. It never came back. He apparently said "it will make a nice runna bout for the missus" or words to that effect. He still lives locally.  Word is that it was crashed quite severely after they sold it.

The second car was biult on order for another of my mates, it was Red, had the 3.36 diff, had the guards ever so slightly flared (at Scottys' Crash Repairs, Willunga),  to accomodate 7" Magnum mags, and was fitted with the big GTR steering wheel. It's only tell tail sign that it was a V8 was three little V8 signs under the word TORANA. One on each front guard and one on the rear spoiler that had been fitted.

I travelled many many miles in that car, drove it only onced, (he was very protective lol). It spent a lot of time on dirt roads too and from work. When he finally sold it, it went to another friend, one of the gang, who at one stage had restored it, run it in Street Drags, showed it in Show an Shine etc. Pretty sure it had a 350 chev and auto fitted too. When he eventually sold it, vowed to get it back and did, after it too had been crashed and was sitting in a shed rusting away (according to Bob Scott owner of Scottys'). Not sure of it's condition at this stage. Am trying to contact that owner. (If you're here 'Happy" please contact me).

The third car, well............ Someone bought a new purple 2 door 's' from Reeves Garage that had been, shall we say, 'well test driven' from Adelaide to Mc Laren Vale, that nearly became an Icon and very collectable car.

Now you may say who is this new bloke with all this info, well, Kingsley Mills still lives locally, although I have only seen him once in the last 10 years. (that was 6 months ago). My best man / apprentice at Reeves' is still my best mate, and the other apprentice at the time who worked on the cars is still local.

Cheers Ian.

Thanks,

The photo above of the Red car is, 'A'.................  a very very early photo of the car before it was sent to Scotty for the flares. And from memory, that

happened almost imediately, as it was fitted with 7" x 13" Magnums.

Or  'B', not the right car, as it definately had flared guards, not really flared but just enough to allow the tyres not to scrape, right from the start.

'C'......  It has been restored with original guards. Not sure why anyone would do this as it was a Dealer built car, sold with Reeves own warranty, (not GMH).

The orange car, was bought, from Millsy, we believe,  by a young member of the Hardy Wines family. ???

Have spoken to my mate this morning, and there were no more Cars built by Reeves. Remembering Holdens were about to release the LH, this is why they were a tad unhappy.

He didn't know of any by City State, but then we were only interested in our little world at the time, and possibly were never told of them.

Not saying they weren't built.

I will find the original owners of both the cars, they are about, and I will find the second owner of the Red car, he is about also.

Just by the by, ............... In 1974/75.. Reeves Garage sold more Holden commercials (utes and panel vans), than any other Dealer in S.A.

Not bad for a little country dealership. AND......... I would like to think that we, the locals, had a big hand in the appearance on to the scene of the 'SANDMANS'

as we all ordered special vehicles during 73/74/75. Mine was a Burgandy 308 HQ Van, inspired by  another local lad, the Father of Tim Slade.

His was a light blue. Mine had these optional extras, that are just std items these days.................. 308, 4 spd, console, bucket seats, Momo steering wheel, GTS grille and badge,GTS dash, carpet, Kingswood arm rests, interior light wiring, chrome (kingswood) tail light surrounds, 7" Aungers (I wanted 8' but the laws had changed while I was waiting for delivery and Reeves wouldn't fit them) I got Sladeys' when he sold his and bought a 253 Torana.

These special biulds were so popular that Holdens couldn't keep up, I had ordered a 3.08 diff with mine, never ever got it. I ordered my new car in September 74, they still had Miles on the speedo at that stage, and got it in March 75, with the up date Dash in klms. 6 looong months. About $4,600.00 I think,  I recon a three on the tree 253 Van was about $2,800.00, all the rest was extras.

My brother in law ordered a red 308 ute after driving my van,  never ever got the console or the 3.08 diff. lol.

:tease: This little emoticon pretty much reminds me of a day down on Aldinga beach, where we spent our summers, when a guy in a  250 six cylinder Cortina

pulled up and bagged the Torana and the driver, saying what a wank....r he was for putting the V8 badges on the car.

:o This one shows his face as we drove off.... 1st gear, little spin, 2nd gear, little spin, 3rd gear, BRAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRPPPPPPPP, BIG SNAKE.

Cheers guys, nice chatting.

Ooops  The Red Car was a City State Dealer Built Car sorry and not Reeves Garage.

There was a Sky Blue V8 LJ XU1 that a Adelaide Holden Dealer Built, my guess it was built by City State, as I said there were Rumours that Reeves Garage Built some for the Police, if it was not them, then maybe it was City State.

I wonder why City State used XU-1s and not just 'S' models.

Those light blue Toranas were a good looking thing, I guess they all were, even the Olive green.

Only ever saw one of each of those colours, and they were both GTRs. The Olive green was an LC. went well.

Anyway, it's all good, if I can find 'Happy', I'll have a heap more info for you.

The Red LJ that City State did was only a Torana 'S'  2-Door then later on changed to XU1 looks, but they did do some XU-1's

Hi Ian. I read your story from the 7th of August and am very interested because I am the one who bought the orange

V8 in 1973 that was built at Reeves garage. Have owned it ever since. I am about to start a restoration project on it.

Your historical knowledge on my car will be priceless. I have many questions that you might be able to help me with.

How did they come up with the Torana V8 SS badging on the front guards and rear spoiler? Where did the QT engines

come from - car swap or separate ? Was there any collaboration with the factory XU2 team ? Do you think  the car sold as

a new V8 through Reeves? How was the engine and steering fitted - was it through trail and error? Would be keen to have

a solid discussion with you and your friends about my car - it is of some Holden historical significance.

Grant.

orange v8

I believe it has Historical Value, due to it Proves there was Holden Dealer Built V8 LJ's and I was told by a high up GM-H Person that GM-H Port Melbourne knew about Reeves Garage and City State Motors in South Australia building these V8 LJ's and turned a blind eye to it, as the Dealership was doing the Warranty on these cars and looking after the customers of these cars.

Looking at the pics, the V8 badge is a HQ V8 boot badge and they have added another S to the original Torana S badge :)

Yes Dave, It is a HQ badge and 1 more S was added. I was just interested as to how they arrived on this combination and not XU2.

If Reeves were doing the warranty on these V8 then there would be no record on the 'Service Warranty Reporting'

on the 'Vehicle Master Listing'. I was about to begin my search here and if what you are saying, it would be futile.

Great info mate, you can't beat first hand info!

Would be good to know you had something to do with Sandmans, but I can assure you that concept was well and truly on the boil way before 1973-5. I have an XX7 ute recorded from 12/72 which we think is one of the original pilot vehicles, plus Leo Pruneau says that when he arrived at GMH in the late 60's that the Sandman name was about even then. John Bagshaw got vanners together in 1973 to discuss what they'd like to see in the van version, probably as the original concept of the Sandman was a sports utility. You couldn't get a console in HQ or HJ commercial or a proper GTS dash in a HQ commercial outside of Sandman but odd that you didn't get a 3.08:1 rear axle if you wanted one as that was the standard rear axle in a 253 and was an option on 308 manual or auto. 3.36:1 was standard with 308 manual and it is not common to find 3.08:1 examples but they do exist - I've recorded some but not many. Just further on above, the GTS speedo in 1974 HQ was a 140mph/225km/h dual scale unit, and Sandman got this also. Any other HQ's ordered with option U21 (sports dash) got a 200km/h speedo. It must have been a HJ though if you ordered it in Sept 1974 and got it in March 1975, and these were all metric. Any HQ or HJ van that was fitted with the Kingswood tail-light surrounds were dealer fit, same with console outside of Sandman. Even the GTS steering wheels were dealer fitted outside of vehicles that were standard with the sports dash.

Orange v8, Aunger had some thing to do with your Dealer Built LJ V8, I don't know if any one is still around at Aunger from the old days or even if Aunger is even about these days, my guess Reeves Garage came up with the Extra 'S' Badge on your LJ to make it some kind of Torana SS etc, Shame Kingsley Mills is still not about or is he, he may have some answers as well.
