So the Question should have been....
Are Colour Coded Bumper Bars STANDARD on LX SS's...
That would be a yes!
Could you order Chrome Bars for an LX SS??
That would be a yes also!
Are Chrome Bumper Bars STANDARD on LX SLR5000's...
That would be a yes!
Could you order Colour Coded Bars for an LX SLR5000?
That would be a yes also!
Could you have an SS without the Stripes??
The Holden paperwork that I have says that they were "Mandatory", but I know of a handful of cars that left the dealership without them...
Back in the Day, you could just about do what yoou wanted..
You can't change the question to suit your answer lol.
That's what makes some of the questions tricky.
EG Fact or Fiction - All LC and LJ GTR's and XU1's were 4 speed manuals from factory.
Think about it.
It only takes one that was an auto to make the statement false.
Posted 17 August 2015 - 11:28 PM
and GTRX and HZUC SL/E had these too

Was there ever an Auto A9X?

I believe there was an auto LC GTR down Melbourne way about 8 or so years ago when I was dabbling in the little Toranas

Yeah that's where 99.9% of my Torana knowledge comes from lol
Fact or Fiction
One of Brock's race Toranas had its radiator in the boot.

Of the three GTR-X's built, one was an auto.
F or F?

UC SL/E had these too
They are not "SL/E" rims. They are Rally rims, they replaced the steel rally rims used on HQ-early HZ, normally had option code N67. Optional in various sizes and stud patterns on almost all Holden, Gemini and Torana and even seen on Statesman. Standard on Sandman, Gypsy, GTS, SL/E, VB Euro pack etc.

I remember finding a delete painted bar option code for HX and HZ GTS, and it was even standard in late HX with some colours from memory. So I bet there was such a code for LX SS too. The reason you don't see many is probably 75-80% of cars are stock orders, and more than likely the only cars to get chrome bars would be retail orders thus a very small %.

This 'Fact or Fiction' thing gets a bit fuzzy when talking about mass production cars.
There are always exceptions to the 'rules', as we've seen with things like Bob Janes 350 HQ utes or wagons or whatever.
For every rule-maker there will be rule-breaker. Also who is the judge of these 'Facts' ?
What is the difference between how a car left the factory door versus how it left the dealership to its first retail owner ? Often quite a bit.
A good example is the XU1 Sprintmaster alloy wheels. To my knowledge these were not factory fitted, they were fitted either in holding yards or even at the dealer's premises. They don't seem to feature on the broadcast sheet. Anything on the production line needs to be on the broadcast sheet, otherwise it won't get done.
Anything 'special' needs to be added to the paperwork pre-production. Things like delete stripes or delete painted bars can often have an PO number, if it was deemed 'popular' but even then something out of the ordinary for a special dealer or VIP could still be added to broadcast sheet.
The automatic A9X is another one yet again. This was built for Wayne Negus but not on the production line, AFAIK it was converted in the GM-H service garage. Does this make it 'factory' ?

On the delete painted bar, the option code was A9Y, introduced in later HX. It was about a $38 option and became standard for colours it suited in late HX like Deauville Blue. Given these option codes were assigned sequentially, obviously A9Y followed A9X so whenever A9X was assigned (first half of 1977), my guess is A9Y wasn't orderable on vehicles until around later July into August 1977. So if it was to appear as a "factory" thing it'd only be on later SS. However as we know certain stuff was possible to order, even by dealer fitment even if it was not an regularly available option. I even have documentation that GMH did for HK for this exact purpose. Almost everything that was possible from an Engineering viewpoint was priced, even though plenty of it was not an available option, unless you were special - then the zone office had pricing so the Bob Janes of the world could get what they wanted. So i'd never make the statement that ALL SS (except A9X) had painted bars. Almost all would be closer.

For those that are coming up to the Fest, have a look at the red 4 door LJ with GTR dash & steering wheel
Stephen is a member of our car club here and that is how he bought it new in 72
He sold it as the family grew too big for the little Torana then10 or so years later he saw it when shopping in nearby Young and it was off the main road and up a hill
AND yes it was for sale and he bought it back
The car was sold NEW like that as a part of the promotion of PB winning Bathurst
Although it had been rallyed by 2 different owners, it had very few dings
Barry
PS. There were mistakes made at the Assembly Factories and there were orders that were not the norm

Could you option a sports dash on non-sports Toranas? Like you could with just about all Holdens, option code U21 later U17. The sports wheels were often dealer fitted too, just bought as a spare part and stuck onto new cars but as Barry says this one may have been a special Torana "sports" package. GMH did a Holden example too in HQ called I think Kingswood Sports, maybe for the same reason? It had cloth inserts, U21 dash, maybe even the sports wheel. Dr Terry has one in his collection, in Saffron metallic.

My HQ does have the instruments & other things that you've listed but not the GTS Steering wheel.
To my knowledge the GTS wheel was never available as a factory option, but 1000s must have been dealer fitted over the years.
In HQ/LJ days a sports steering wheel would've been out of place because the only ones available were badged GTS or GTR, with the Sandman one added in 1974. This is probably one of the reasons that GM-H made the blank horn pad for LH/HJ onwards.

What about LH, LX & UC ? They all had 'sports' instruments on the high models which were optional for the lesser models.

I couldn't remember if it had the wheel or not.
With UC and WB, did the sports wheel come with the selection of the selection of U17 sports dash? Or was it another option again?
I have seen in the charts in features manuals that the NK3 15.5" sports wheel is shown as S for Standard for Sandman and GTS for HZ (and also as part of the VTJ SL/E package on Caprice model), but it also shows A as Available for both HZ Premier sedan and wagon. I have seen a lot of the I think dealers used to call "country packs" over the years in HZ Premiers with a woodgrain U17 dash and sports wheel, always wondered if the wheels were part of the package. The POA document shows NK3 as only being available as an option from 1/1/78 vehicle production and only with M11 console shift. This could only be referring to Premier as it appears to be the only place NK3 was an option (as it was standard with XX7, XU3, VTJ or GTS).
Don't forget SS as well for HQ badge inserts (but not at HQ or LJ release as stated).

I wasn't 100% sure about the options for combined instruments in the bigger Torana so refrained from making comment.
