couldn't see anything in your book.

That's an easy one Mick. It is for ADR27A auto 6cyl Holden (as in HX-HZ) engines used in LX and UC. The X was stamped at the assembly plant to show it was going into an LX (later UC). Exact same principle and the 11, 12 or S prefix used for engines into Statesmans. The manual versions remained as Torana engines and didn't need the X.

Thanks Byron,
any idea why the engine prefixes changed in Sept 78?
cheers

HQ engine number sequence reached 999,999 during HZ so new prefix required for number sequence to start over ie: ZL1001

Byron has explained why, but these prefixes are all listed under their respective model applications.

Dr Terry,
Why was there a change in the engine prefixes on the 1 Sept 1978?
cheers

There wasn't for Torana engines Mick, they continued with H prefix and their own sequence. Only the auto 6cyl engines changed inline with the chance from Qx to Zx in HZ but it wasn't September it was closer to December.

That cannot be correct Mick, as Z prefixed engines didn't appear in cars until around Nov-Dec 1978. They may have started stamping engines in September with the Z prefixes but Q prefixes were still being put into cars in 10/78 into 11/78. The engine plant at Fisherman's bend didn't specially make engines for auto 6cyl Torana either, they were simply sent out as a Holden auto engine and it was the assembly plant that stamped the X into them, so when Z prefixes started in Holden they'd start in Torana at the same time.
I have the Service Bulletin somewhere that states the date they started, i'll have a look tonight.
The LD2 auto engine in later UC is XZE too, you have it as XZD

f or f ?
The V8 Holden engine was based upon a Chev V8 but ended up being "unique" in design by being the lightest V8 of the era?...and...the plastic has won more Panoramic titles than any other V8?

Maybe the lightest cast iron V8? Alloy inlet manifold, timing cover and water pump.
But, also, dissy at different end of the block and different "V" angle compared to Chev?

apparently,
the LJ was a cover to throw the media off of the LH coming out,
could be wrong,
although Harry did put a 253 into an XU1,
where GM did make 3 V8 LJ's,
