GMH changed the specification for the 350ci engine for fitment to HQ. Fact or Fiction?
Posted 31 August 2015 - 07:10 PM
was it the 28/04/1972 Al?
Australian Muscle Car Magazine issue 9
Ian Tate interview, the Pink V8 Prototype only had 6 Cyl rego, Ian says it on the Chevron Holden Dealer Team DVD as well. Ian told me that it only had 6 Cyl rego but running the V8 from when I rang him about the subject matter, he said he drove it for about 4 weeks, Larry Perkins remembers the Pink V8 Prototype, but never drove the Pink car.

I'll say fact.
I'm sure the GMH boffins would have felt it necessary to reduce the power output of the 350 Chev for the HQ because...... well.... just because they are GMH Boofheads.

It wasn't Holden that reduced the power output of the 350 SBC. They got what GM USA gave them off the shelf.
In that era the US anti-pollution laws were being introduced (a bit like our ADR27A) & this led to outputs decreasing as the years progressed.
The peak of the muscle car era in the USA was around 69/70, so from 71 onwards, each year saw lower compressions & lower outputs. The ADR27 version of the HQ 350 in 1973 had even less output than the 71 version, although GM-H didn't publish any new figures to my knowledge.
One of the reason that the 350 was dropped from the HJ was that the 74/75 version probably had less power than the HJ 308.

Dr Terry nailed it. The GM US L48 was used from HT through to HQ (except for HT-HG 350 auto). The L48 engine specs changed.
350 wasn't dropped from HJ Terry, the 400 was. And 99% sure for the reason you state!
Yes the GMH boys were a bit afraid to unleash any thing powerful but not afraid to build it
454 Monaro (Old Man Emu)

427 HRT Monaro
Old Man Emu wasn't a 454 Al.

Posted 31 August 2015 - 09:54 PM
I heard they took a Big Block V8 from one of there GM Cars that was sent to Holden and put in the Old Man Emu, there was Rumours it was a 454 Big Block V8 then a story of a 400 Chev V8 then it was only a 350 Chev V8.

Each to there own
The Red 6 Cyl was a Goer for sure, Harry and Ian Tate and Dave Bennett work on them in the early days got them going.
But like the old saying, there is nothing Quite like a V8

Fact.
Brabham Conversions in the UK launched their modified HA Viva the HA Viva GT in October 1965.

The 350Z (which was a 400) was presented as an Old Man Emu initially, but there was an earlier example again.

Didn't read the question right lol.
Was the Brabham Torana released in 68?
No, it was 23 October 1967.
On the topic of the Brabham Viva, AFAIK they weren't built at the factory. They were converted on behalf of the dealers, by Brabham, with Vauxhall's approval.
I believe it was John Bagshaw who saw this on a visit to the UK & did a deal with Jack Brabham. He signed him for use of his name & purchased the kits which Holden fitted on the production line.
So in reality, while a Brabham Torana was a factory model, the Brabham Viva was not.

Correct Dr Terry.
The Brabham HA Viva GT was developed and built by Brabham Conversions not Vauxhall.
They would also convert used HA Vivas' to GT spec for private customers.
Cheers
Dave.
