I thought i better post the first topic in here... seeing as though i asked for this section to be added!

Just curious as to what the widest tyre you could stick on a 7" rim without it looking crap.
thanks

I cant answer exactly but no doubt CHOPPER can. I have 235/60/14's on the 7" spare rear set. They were recently fitted by Discount Tyres so i reckon they must be legal.

Cheers

You wouldn't wanna go any more than 235s though, I think 225s would be my choice...

I had 265x50x15's on a 7 inch rim and they looked shit-house. Too much sidewall and too much body roll.

235 or 245 would be ideal

That sounds absolutely ridiculous, are you talking about 8" rims?

How wide would you go on a 6" rim?

The short answer is it depends on the off set of the rims and the amount of room between the hub and the inner gaurd.

i think biggest on a 6inch is 235, i had a marking on my old 6inchers saying widest tyre 235

Yeah i wouldnt go a 265 on a 7 inch rim, 245 is the max i reckon on a 7 or else they start looking a bit funny,

yokohama say you can put a 275/60/15 on a 7" rim.
id say the lower the profile the wider the rim must be

Max. of 235 on a 6" wide rim.
Max. of 275 on a 7" wide rim.

I only log in on weekends, so be patient for my technical advice. Either that, or post a message at my forums for an answer within 48 hours.

Old thread I know.... but has anybody got some pics of big rubber on a 7" rim? As I'm looking for the biggest tire I can get for as much traction & still want it to look good, as Iv heard going too big makes it look sh1t.

Rims will be original wb caprice 15"x7" on a HX ute.

Cheers, Nig.

I'd also like to know what the minimum size tyre is allowed on a 7" rim. Went to tyrepower today and said I want a 195/55/15 put on my 7" rims and the guy said its not legal. Then after some chat suddenly it was ok. I need a smaller diameter tyre to clear the front lips of the guards for my new Welds. If anyone knows whether this tyre will clear the guards it would be good to know as the car is booked in for Friday.

Cheers Wayne

If you go to the tire manufacture website, they "should" have minimum and maximum widths that are recommended for each size...  (tirerack.com has a decent amount of listings too for them all and have the specs as well)

I just picked out a Kumho in that size off hand, and they say 5.5" - 7" width is fine for them.

What width and offset are your front rims?
A 205/55/15 or 195/60/15 have both fit fine for me on an unflared LX using a 7 inch rim with 4.25 inch backspace.

The Yokohama specifications for a 195/55/15 is 5.5 - 7.0
http://www.yokohamat...im_wheel_width/

The basic formula I use was taken from the Tyre Bible.

The tyre width in the calculation is in mm.

Tyres with profile greater than or equal to 50
Min Rim Width = round(Tyre Width * 0.7 * 0.03937 * 2,0) / 2
Max Rim Width = Min Rim Width + 1.5

Tyres with profile less than 50
Min Rim Width = round(Tyre Width * 0.85 * 0.03937 * 2,0) / 2
Max Rim Width = Min Rim Width + 1.5

The rim range specified by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia is typically greater than the rim range specified by the calculation. For example the Tyre and Rim Association may specify 5.0 to 7.5 whereas the calculation will specify 5.5 - 7.0

The NCOP specifies that the rim must be within the range specified by the tyre manufacturer so you will need to get the specification from the manufacturer for the actual tyre fitted. Typically the tyre manufacturers rim specification will match the formula above.

Front rims are 4.5" BS. I'll soon see if a 195/55 can go on as the car is getting them in the morning then will have a wheel alignment and a full brake bleed.

Put the 195/55/15's on the front today on 7inch rims no problems. Didnt get the wheel alignment yet or do the full brake bleed as I still have to change the brake lines next week so will do the brake bleed then. Gotta change the tie rod ends for ones with the grease nipple on the side so hoping to knock that off next week also.
