As a new LH 5 thou owner just coming to terms with what's the popular choices and themes with these cars...
Has there been a poll on what the most desired colour combos are?
I've got a Sable Metallic with black vinyl/herringbone interior car...not sure where this rates in the grand scheme of things...
Cheers,

I think sometimes people see an old faded paint job on a Torana and think, gee that colours not real nice that couldn't have been a popular colour.
I know I have thought that, then I seen some the restorations on here, new paint, nice clear coat over the metallics and wow, what an awesome colour.
Torana's have been blessed with some amazing colours and none of them should be written off without first seeing an example bought back to life.
One for example is Antelope, crappy when faded at 40 years old, coolest classiest colour when restored, love it.

I'm with Gene, but a bit biased.
Have always loved Barbados Green, flares, blackouts etc, Used to be a Barbados Sedan with flares and tank, Neale Wheels, and silver LX paint mask in Toowoomba area, looked brilliant!

Ultra Blue for me
Followed closely by Mint julep and then the Red like in Mick's Avatar and then Yellow.
There really were some fantastic colours, honestly the list of ones I don't like would be much shorter

One of the nicest colors on a SLR would have to be windsor blue.

I think the best colour for SL/R 5000 is white, or yellow.
makes them easier to spot when looking for a fare.

Correct. nor was Windsor Blue iirc.
For my taste the best HQ colours on LH would be Orchid, Saffron, Sunburst and Azure. The best HJ colours would probably be Sepia, Satin Mist and Cyclamen. Deauville blue is quite nice in the flesh too.
Late HJ/LX colours i'd probably say Papaya, Royal Plum or maybe Bordeaux but without the graffiti down the bottom of the doors.
I've recorded some HJ Sandmans in some older colours, and some of these would be nice on special order LH SLR5000. Like Daytona Bronze for example or Silver Mink.
Or in all HQ/HJ/LX colours anything but Barbados, Jamaica Lime, Mint julep or Durham!

Agree with most of these colours, royal plum is great. From memory there are two different shades of saffron, one is metallic. Can't go past barbados

Saffron is metallic. I have a 308 HQ Sandman van in it and a mate has an L34 in it also. I can't recall if it was the first GMH reddish (or red base) metallic or close to the first. There were certainly plenty of silver metallic, yellowish (gold) metallic and blue or blue-ish metallic around before it although I guess you could argue Saffron is a yellow metallic with red mixed in like purple is a blue metallic with red mixed in.
Nice colour though regardless!

Chamois looks like Porridge on base and mid level cars but I agree it looks good with blackouts, and especially on HJ GTS with red highlights (badges etc). Warwick Yellow is like that too, when you see it on a plain car like a HK KIngswood it looks dull, but give it blackouts/stripes and red highlights (badges, wheelarch moulds and boot garnish) and its looks awesome.

It wouldn't be true LX 5000 scheme without the bottom door graffiti right?
I'm also partial to Royal Plum; not particularly my favourite when I first bought it (L32) but it really grew on me, particularly since many people repainted their Royal Plums another colour making mine appear rarer.

Agree Warwick yellow was my favorite HK Monaro colour!

All the old colours really stand out now when converted to 2 pak.
I admit I know nothing about paint but the cars seem to be brighter and shiner done with it than even when they were new.
How about Holden now recreating these old HQ and on colours in their VE & VF cars, there is papaya called Fantale, lime/barbados green called Crunch, cortez red called Ignition, deauville/corinthian blue called Karma, bordeaux called Alchemy, contessa gold called Wildfire, juniper/jade green called Royal Peacock, mint julep called Atomic and now a persian sand released a few weeks back.
Everything old is new again...

I admit I know nothing about paint but the cars seem to be brighter and shinier ... than even when they were new.
From another forum:
I have dealt with paint on and off for 40 years and below are just a few of the probs.
1. paint is made from different materials, and not all the mfgs use the same quality of material which is one reason the price and color of a particular color will vary from mfg to mfg.
2. the paint the early cars were originally painted with has not existed for maybe 30 years, therefore it is absolutely impossible to duplicate the orig color.
3. the orig cars did not have clear on them . . 99.9% of the repaints are done with clear which changes the look.
4. in the US, the EPA has forced the mgs to change some of the toners over the years . . ppg has probably changed 5 times in the last 40 years . . when the toner is changed, the color changes a bit . . one of the things that was removed was lead . . the lead was in several colors such as yellow, red and white . . removing the lead drastically changed the color of the paint and also made it a bit translucent.
5. due to this translucent/thin paint problem, it now takes more paint to prevent being able to see thru it to the primer, and since paint is so expensive and it would take maybe 6 coats to eliminate this problem, many shops are now using primer that is tinted the same color as the paint.
6. spraying this thin paint over different colored primers causes a different look so if one shop paints red over dark gray primer, it will look darker than the same paint over light gray primer etc.
7. spray gun pressure can affect metal flake colors.
