There where at least 4 x MHDT sports sedans dating back to the start of 1976.
Bond built and paid for the first one but it ran hdt colours.

As Firth said in 1983 in Melbourne these where not pressed for sports sedans (or group c). I don't doubt that like Brock that Firth had inconsistencies in his recall in later years but we all have less ability for detail as we get older and the years go on.
The sport sedan pics show the reality.
Regardless of the speculation of hdt cars cheating, it was only done by Firth to test what was possible for a future series.
Obviously if Shepard or someone at hdt sold or gave some of them to Grice/Negus etc then make no mistake HDT would have been on the lookout for them come race day. Anyone who knows those years would also know that any suspected advantage was regularly subject to a lodged protest. I imagine someone might be able to get away with a race or perhaps two, but word would have soon gotten out or they would have picked them up at scrutineering. I still doubt they where used on a group c car as they would be too easy to detect and too easy to neglect under race conditions.
More than likely at some stage some of them where run on a local perth racecar. When I had my first torana they where advertised for sale in the sunday readers mart on several occasions in about 1985. Don't know if it was the exact panels shown in the first pics as I had no interest in looking at them for a steet car. Someone would know the history of who from hdt let them out and who ended up with them.

Hi to all ,
I think I mentioned before that I purchased these off Wayne in the HDT Torana Hatchback race days (including most of the other gear he had ) in 1977,78,79 Malboro paint system on the guards , bonnet , nose cone , they were used on the A9X in a street car race or simular , I was there at the race. The nose cone got slightly damaged and it was that way when I sold all the panelos to Ron from Automotive Sports Engineering for his Wanneroo Torana.
The rear boot and rear doors as per for a 4 door were still in primer and had never been used on his HDT L34. I dont think any of the panels were used on the L34 as the paint was for the LX version.
I had these aluminium panels for many years including a whole set of factory steel panels and I thought one day what use are the aluminium ones to me so I sold them to Ron as such in around year 2000-2001 approx.
They certainly were well made as has been spoken about.
cheers Terry

They must have been pressed up before homologation of the hatchback though, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered with the rear doors and boot lid. You know the fella who owns them now Terry, so you know they are in good hands.
From memory a couple of these aluminium panels were for sale here in Perth about 2 years ago on Gumtree or ebay. I think the price from memory was about $1200.

Hi guys ,
I am not sure where my other notes or answers went (I might have stuffed up ) but just to re indicate the photos of the aluminum panels are all the ones that I purchased from Wayne Negus when he still had his old original garage , ie maybe 1980 or close , I brought most of the ex race gear at that time like I did from HDT Chetwynd Street Melbourne when PB purchased HDT off GM , John Shepherd etc beginning of 1980.
There were no aluminium panels in Melbourne at the time though that I saw for interest.
Wayne did use the guards ,nose cone and bonnet but in thinking I don't think the bonnet had a hole so I am not sure how that worked on the A9X race car , I just cant remember.
I sold the panels late 1980,s when I worked out that I probably would never fit them to my car.
regards Terry

It wouldn't be easy to hide them from the scrutineers.
Paint hides most stuff. The falcons would use painted aluminium heads during qualifying.

Magnetic paint? Either way, you couldn't allow them to open or close any doors or the boot lid or bonnet.
