Epic project.

Rust repairs are inspiring.

Wondering a few things;

Those seats look heavy, how do they compare to factory gear in terms of weight?

Are you running just a gassed mig for panel work? Are you patching in brand new steel? Sorry if stupid question/s.

This is the second time today that I've come across a Torana rocking some kind of elec pwr steer setup.

What's the story there, if any?

Another owner/driver on youtube was saying it just hugs the steering column and has some basic adjustment for low-mid-hi sorta thing which = assistance. Unsure of details as such, I've got some research to do obviously. How do they compare to manual steer etc. ? I've never driven a VE or the likes.

Also curious about the electronic handbrake setup. Are there servos mounted in the back that get activated and push / pull on a mechanism, or is it some trippy electro-magnetic future stuff enmeshed in quantum wobble fields and progressive psytrance and other such things?

If your 12v supply shorts or disconnects... does the car roll away?

cheers, all the best with the build. Having a green light from the engineer must be a nice feeling.

Seats are heavy yes. Can't compare to original  but what gives it weight are the electric bases.  the stock ve would be lighter than Torana I reckon

Rust repairs  gassed mig.  new replacement panels if they are available or then make own patches from new .9mm mild steel sheet

Steering.  I looked at electric steer but from the ones available they didn't seem to allow a long enough column to put the wheel where I wanted  (this is what I think you are referring to). I am running electric power steer pump. Reason being the LSA doesn't come with a pwr steer pump so running An electric pump semi next logical thing

Electric handbrake is a linear actuator pulling on two cables.  loose power and it just stays in same state it was in at time of power loss

Hopefully that answers you questions.  and there are no dumb questions.  we all need to learn some way and I have asked many questions that I thought were dumb as well.

Just amazing work. As much as there is two trains of thought in regards to what people will and will not do, the crux is you are building a car to suit you not other people. I am fine with original as it left holden rebuilds (rivet counters) but personally I might casually glance at them at a show but they don't float my boat. i will always go to the modified ones to see what they have done to make them much better than holden built them. After owning 2016 performance cars as a driver I have become forever spoiled. Doing the old 100mph in these cars was dangerous yet today the modern performance car with its brakes, suspension, tyres, engine, gearboxes etc its all easy. That's why I prefer a modified version of the torana to a standard one. This is a great example of building something that you want. Well done.

Makes enough sense, thanks mate.

Interesting to see this one take shape, all the best with your build : )

Now one of the most time consuming jobs so far has been cutting out all the rust in the rear screen .. made
difficult because it was the whole top section (which had previously been repaired just so it could hold bog)
along with the sides and the bottom corners

IMG_9113_zpsbjucc7a3.jpg

had to make a new piece to fit the top of the roof - started with a straight piece and folded the lips into it

IMG_8935_zpsinpao7up.jpg

then had to use the shrinker/stretcher to get the bend

now pretty much upto date

while car is on rotisserie it has meant can start the work on the front cross member .. 3 things need to be done to it while its out

1. modify to fit the power steering rack

2. modify it to fit the sump

3. move engine mount on the drivers side back to give clearance for the A/C compressor

so far its been a mission as well .. will post more pics when time permits and get closer to finishing the cross member

Just wondering what you did with the boot lock and how you got this to work?

I was considering similar for the LC, But I found the LC lock won't allow the lock mechanism to turn if its lock if that makes sense. Does this work on the LH? Maybe the Locks are different.

Hahaha. We just modified as you see in the pics with original boot lock and all worked perfectly . Then a DOH! Moment. All the times we were doing this/testing etc we had the key in the barrel. Remove key NO go.....

Solved it though we used a door lock barrel and all
Is fine

I dunno if it's an optical illusion but how did you get the spot welds in the boot area to look recessed?

They aren't recessed. They were all drilled then plug welded

Well done. Will have to do that with the LC.

Very nice work on the rust repair and the integration of the modern components.

I personally prefer old school, but a boot release is a nice thing to have.

I am much the same... build what you want for yourself.... but at shows i may look at the factory restored ones but tend to get drawn to the modified ones

and thanks for the comments..... much appreciated :)

Thanks Kal05... its been a challenge some of the work.. but getting there... and yes i cant wait till its finished as well.....   enjoy building it but the space its taking up in pieces along with just wanting to enjoy driving it when i see others around is killing me

Thanks Grump xu1....    its progression is sometimes slow... its funny how some of the things you think will take a while actually are quick and the quicker ones things take longer... I'm not sure whether it is the actual case or more the fact that things that are either boring/not changing a great deal seem to feel like they take longer but the things making a greater difference in appearance seem quicker... guess like the old saying "time flies when your having fun"

Thanks xu2308 - yes it should be a good thing the LSA - will do a few little mods to the engine (cam and lower pulley)

6.2 + a blower

Thanks grumpy xu1 - I wanted to do many years ago a 4wd GTR setup (ever since i saw a VL calais with the running gear the more recently a cross8 running gear ) but never got round to it, and now its being done so I wanted to do something a little different.. Knowing someone would get the LSA in and done before me wasnt to much of a big fuss but getting it legally in there is a different mater ..

Excellent work, your rust repairs are very tidy   :spoton:

yes rust repairs - I am sure this is what slows every build down... the modifications have been easy.. the retrofitting has been quick but cutting out rust and replacing has taken a very looooooong time
