Sadly at that stage I didn't know what to look for... I've a few photos and the head number looks to be 281584 something (probably a 3)

You don't need X-ray vision to see the QL under the JP and I believe when Keith purchased this engine it still even had its original head on top, a low compression 2811930 9G3.........
Anthony warned him to stay well away I believe
Please.........

No, you need a damn good imagination .... FroCked if I can see anything under the JP (but for the record, I don't have X-ray vision)

QL under the JP? Really? Must have changed the prefix without changing the number? lol.
Adam, put me down for $100 towards the X-ray of Keith's block. The truth is out there.

Does the car JP388285 came from still exist?
Posted 26 February 2016 - 09:25 AM
It was originally in H290093
Posted 26 February 2016 - 09:56 AM
It was in an LX hatch and running triple webers with a 12 port head when I bought it. and yes I am willing to have it xrayed as I did invest a lot of money into buying this engine ($7300 appx) and obviously don't want its cred to be ruined. Sold the triples for $1600 so not too bad and the head has roller rockers, big valves and plenty of porting could be worth up to a grand. The short engine looks good and is only 30 thou over, proper xu1 baffled sump, etc

Your short engine does indeed look good - it is Holdens stamping.
The whitewashers have been using whitewash that has turned poo brown for quite some time.
As far as these whitewashers are concerned all JP engine blocks from late July onwards must have a second casting date on the passenger side of block and if they do not then they are have been restamped - hence the dribble.
Keep your chin up man.

Was this a green SS hatchback, A9X flares etc, originally a 202 M20? If so that engine was in that car in the late 80's or possibly 1990 as I looked at the car in Valentine NSW around that time. Almost bought it. The guy that had the car bought the engine from the wreckers - it was out of a smashed XU1 and was original to the car, from memory it was a one owner car or low kM etc. I remember looking up the number in the CAMS bulletin and it was a 150 list engine, but could never remember which one. The whole SS was $6000 or thereabouts, really clean car just had a lot of humidity blisters in the Acrylic on the quarters. I was going to buy it and remove the 202, sell off the Webers and put a 253 back in the car, but the humidity blisters turned me off it. At the time the going rate for an A9X hatch was $15k so $6k for a 6cyl SS was a lot of money - I figured on getting $4k back for the car with a 253, $500 for the Webers and I'd have kept the XU1 engine. $ didn't add up. A bloke called Jamie ended up buying it.

I reckon we are talking the same car y3. This one had bits of old blistering chrome all over the engine, on the carbies etc. wouldn't be too be green LX hatches getting around with JPs and triple webers. The car looked very run down and Jamie was not the guy who sold it to me.

That will be the same car for sure. It had been sitting under a cover under the guy's house for a few years when I looked at it, hence the humidity blisters. I remember him telling me that the engine was a virgin when they rebuilt it, I think he said the XU1 was red and it had been wrapped around a pole. Again an old memory but I don't think he got the gearbox, just the engine and the hatchback had its old M20 in it. I don't recall if he'd got the XU1 carbs or not but he definitely had put Webers and a 12 port head on it. It would have been seen around Lake Macquarie and Newcastle in the 80's, he did say he'd taken it over to Kooragang drags. At least I now know which engine it was off the 150 list! I may have even taken photos, but not sure where they are today. Will be around somewhere but I cannot find other photos I've been looking for recently so they'll be with them.
