SL/R is to stand for Sports Luxury/Race
Going by that an S is Sports and there is nothing Sporty about an S!

I always thought of it as.
S was for standard.
SL was standard with luxury appointments.

I thought the same, but I read in a magazine last week about the SL/R, so the rest is only my take on the S and SL, including a bit of tongue in check

S=Belmont
SL=Kingswood
SL/R=somewhere between Kingswood and GTS. Essentially a GTS Torana with some Kingswood stuff, like still has plastic covers and no fluted guards.

Officially:-
S = Special
SL = Super Luxury
SL/R = Super Luxury/Rally (also Race) - both are mentioned in GM-H literature.
