Warren i have another set of HS8's here and they are all Jag items, & they all open to 100%.

They have the needles BAW x 2, BBC x 1 in them, but these are all still .100" swing.

Are they supposed to be .125" standard?

I'm guessing not as i doubt you would bother going from a .125" fixed to .100" swing on a HS8?

SU Midel do a needle conversion kit but this is for turning fixed needles into swing:

The later model carbs were spring needles. You can convert your carbs to take a fixed needle by getting a bush made similar to the link for Midels. I haven't got any 2" carbs with spring needles to compare with, but the Midel pic almost looks like it might convert from spring to fixed, not the way it is listed, not sure why you would convert to spring needles, there's a better choice with fixed, maybe a phone call to Midels to confirm.

Agreed. I thought it was the other way around when I saw the pic too, worth a phone call.

Do I need to get a main jet to suit the .125" needles or can the one for the .100" stay?

And we're right, after a phone call to Midel those conversion kits will allow for a fixed needle to be fitted.

I have successfully drilled .090" jets out to .125" which are still in the HS8's that I have, they ran the car to 13.2 over the 1/4 until I fitted the HD8's so I could run alky.

I didn't think they looked right.

Cheers Waz,

So all up, i'll have to get 2 of my lids machined, three matching .125" needles with conversions, possibly new jets(but haven't checked them yet), carby kits, and look into getting 30 degree angled fuel bowls....
Not much if you say it fast I guess!

I just bought all of the above from SU Midel Jonesy and it was quite reasonable. $300-$400 will get you it all for the three carbs.

Just curious, but do you recall what mph you ran with them ( the HS8s with drilled jets) back then Warren? Also, what tyres were you using then- was it still full slicks?

What manifold are you using Jonesy? You may get away with a slight mod the the bowl pivots, whilst not technically ideal it works, that's what I had with the "Torana" Armours.

I have the 30 degree armours Warren, which looks like it might need a bit more than a tweak.

The only real difference is the carb flange is turned down 15 degrees on the other armours, would be pretty easy to do?

Great, thanks! Was that time with about 1.8-1.9 60 foot? Sorry, just curious and comparing this to my current mph etc to my times, which I need to work on.

1.8/1.9 sounds about right.

Bit of an update...

So it has been very busy round here, and I have a few projects on the go, but I have started rebuilding my 2 inch SUs... got 2 out of three done.

Firstly, what a great carb to rebuild. Marvellously simple. No need to even refer to a manual or anything they are just so straight forward.

I will need to wait a while now though as unfortunately I have a hole/ crack in one of the fuel bowls from an accident, but I have ordered a new bowl from the UK- not expensive, 40 bucks or so, but it will take a while to arrive I imagine.

I want to port out the warnerford manifold as much as I can to match the 2 inch carb (they are designed for 1 3/4 carbs by the look of it). However, i have to find my die grinder first. STuffed if i know where it is...

They sell a bush with a grub screw to convert to fixed screw. I have some here as I needed to convert mine. Not expensive and easy to setup.

I will try to get a pic and will post back.

Parts from the UK generally turn up reasonably quick.

Not sure about 2 1/2" but there was a 2 1/8" fitted to some Jags.

Gday again, the rebuild is progressing nicely... still a few things to do but waiting on the new fuel bowl so no rush...

I havent polished things to the enth degree as at the end of the day I am just experimenting with the 2 inch SUs. Iff I fall in love with them, I will probably improve the finish on them. I soda blasted them and gave the dashpots a quick rub with wet and dry but thats it for the exterior.

The internals are all new though.

Quick question... As I am running a warnerford, which I know is a little short so not ideal (but its what I have and it came with the carbs- so I figure I may as well just use it for now), I was thinking of making some extenders for the manifold out of some plate and allum. pipe to effectively lengthen the manifold say 2 inches... However I then remembered that some spacers came with my box of parts- i havent cleaned these up at all yet as I wasn't sure whether I would be using them...

Here are some pics of them;

I figure that these spaces could be good for increasing the runner length... With the spacers, plus 3 inch bell mouth trumpets (which I will be buying from SU Midel), the runner length from the face of the manifold to the end of the bell mouth will be 14 inches. Not sure exactly of the measurement to the valve though, maybe 17 inches?

So my question is, what is the ideal runner length for peak power at 6000rpm and a powerband between 4-6500rpm? I have seen phenolic spaces for 2 inch carbs from the UK so it would not be hard to extend the length a little more if needed.

Great stuff,

longer manifolds are used for more torque and high rpm,

and 8 inch long armours are able to be purchased for $650.

Longer manifolds should make more Torque and shorter manifolds should make more top end power but each engine combo will like different lengths depending on which part of the rev range you are tuning for. Just see how u go with what you have.

Cheers Dave but as this is just an experiment and some R&D at this stage I am not really keen spending more than I need to at this stage, hence I will stick with the warnerford for now. Unless someone wants to swap some 'torana' armours for my warnerford? (Unlikely I know but i'll try my luck LOL).

Its handy to know that you can get the made up if needed. What do armours go for on the second hand market?
