Hi Chris I was wondering the same thing how you would go registering a 454 in qld.

The reason I ask is a couple of years back I looked at a hatch fitted with 454 big block in qld. Hatch was unregistered but had MOD PLATE which when I looked at the paperwork that went with the plate it said HOLDEN V8 CONVERSION. The seller assured me this was all it needed but I wasn't convinced.I took photos of the paperwork and went away to do my own homework to see if it was possible to get registered. When talking to people who do MOD PLATE inspections they told me that you can't put 454 into a torana in qld. They said you use to be able but changed the rules and I can't remember when they said the rules changed.I then contacted the transport department in the modification section and the bloke was very helpfull. He took the information I gave him as he wasn't sure but said he would find out and get back to me.He rang back a couple of hours later and said ther was no way I could ever get that car registered in qld.He did say the biggest engine you could fit was a LS because of the weight with the alloy so hopefully that is how you get through because the one I looked at was steel.

Hopefully I am wrong for your sake because that engine would be awesome. The one I drove was a tyre shredder and that engine you have there would leave it for dead.

Dale, your right! You cannot register this torana or any torana with this engine, from memory I think the biggest you can go is 372cubic inch, it is because the torana has a monocoque chassis and it will only handle so much hp. This car is already registered, so I'm fitting it out going to make sure everything works as it should and have a bit of fun while I'm at it!
I have another LX hatch that that is having body work and strengthing and when I'm happy with the 454 drive train it will be fitted to it! This one won't be registered!

The rules changed about 15 years ago in a few States on allowing big blocks, I registered mine over 25 years ago when it was not such a problem. Two other canberra guys who owned Horse Power Haven, did 454 conversions on there Torana's a couple of years after mine without chassis kits, their engineer was checkin Warren's car for quite some time for cracking, he was drag racing the car a lot, ran high nines. After a year or so there was no noticeable damage to the chassis. What I'm getting at, it was more about rego and the size of the engine than the strength of the car. I have a full chassis in mine only because we had no idea at the time of how the car would react and trying to make rego happy was the reason.

Hi guys, a little bit done on the weekend, tranny and drop tank fitted. Tail shaft was too long by about 35mm, will be getting it shortened this week, we will find out who stuffed up! Me or them!

Viney,

I'm with all the others, one tough Torana.

Where did you get the rear rubber 335-35-15 from mate, you don't see that size rubber in the 15" profile.

Thanks,

VB

Viney that is a shame but it makes sense. Is this driveline/car heading to the dragstrip?

Cameron, the car above is a L32, very little rust. Nearly rust free and has not had any major modifications, this will need a full resto! The other hatch I have was a L20 so it is on the rotisserie getting a full refurb. with some mods. This is the car that will finally get the LSX! When I get sick of burning tyres and racing down the drag strip, I'll fit a 308 or 350 and get it registered.

VB, tyres I purchased from Stuckey Tyres in Brunswick, pretty cheap tyre about $600 each from memory. They stock or can get all sorts of tyres, I also got 2 sets of Yoky 285/40/15 off them as well. The Michelins are an old school race tyre, the T15 are soft compound where as the TB5 are a hard compound.

Chris sounds like fun. Lots of rubber under the back. What colour will the car be?

Mick, 285 were about $500 each + freight to Qld. Good service from those guys too, I had delivered to my front door in a few days.
Cameron I have already painted engine bay in the SL Hatch Barbados green, but having second thoughts! All three cars I have we're all Royal Plum so maybe go back to original on the L32 Hatch??

Viney,

Thanks for the info and letting us know who to get the rubber from.

Did the 335's fit under the back OK. If you have someone in the back do you find them scrubbing at all. I see you have a bit of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the flair, is this due to them being a little wide. !!

The torana looks very tough mate. And the white car and gold Simmons is a great combination.

Sorry about the double up!

VB, I haven't had anyone in the back yet, the car hasn't been on the road since fitting this combination, the guards have been rolled where as they touch the flares, they are only 120mm wide. If I have issues I might have to cut the guards and fit 140mm flares, at the moment the tyres sit flush with the outside of the flare. The two pictures above are the combo's I have been playing around with, top pic is the Gold Simmons 11x15 with 285,s and the other is Black Simmons 11x15 with 335,s, both have different offsets. The 285,s don't look as good on the 11inch rims I'll need to go back to 10x15.

Chris colour is tough as I like several but if its a numbers restore then imo the original colour is the only choice. For me with a modified car its any colour (even if its not holden or from that particular model year or option). I am going to re-do mine yellow as it was originally orange and I want a change. All I need now is the money to do it and then find a good painter that is not ludicrously priced.

By the way your LSX454 is actually well priced I see even eagle performance in aus are selling them at under AU$18k on ebay.

Cameron
I was lucky I brought it when the dollar was right I only paid $12 000, as all my parts. I I said in one of my earlier posts, cheap HP!!!

Engine wise I don't think I'm over $20 000 yet!!! Lol.

The hatch went to Brissy today, to Fat Pipes! Will be back in a couple weeks with new extractors and exhausts! Won't be far away from start up.

Had the same issue with the flairs on mine, went with the Hornet wide flairs and now they sit in 20mm.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to purchase a pair, now I have got the rim offset right and the 335's fit ok I'm going get a pair of 345''s.
Myss427 do you know if Hornet Composites are still about?

I just did some checking, they are gone, I'll try Repliglass in Brissy!

They closed a while ago. As far as I am aware that mold for the wider than standard a9x rear flares was a Hornet design unless someone has copied them or brought their molds. Peter tried to find a set for his hatch 18mths ago with no luck so he modified the standard ones and moved his shockies.
