Nothing to do with Vicroads at this point in time. Just make sure you get a detailed receipt with all the cars numbers and features on it from the owner.

Make sure the owner puts his/her full name and residential address on the invoice and view their drivers licence (if they have one) to be sure.

Any old rego papers, log books etc the current owner can provide would aslo be handy.

What sort of rolling shell is it? Is it a Torana with the chassis number on the front frame, a HD-HG with it on the firewall, a HQ-WB with it on readily removeable rails or something like a VB-VH with it all on the radiator support?

Does it have all tags and if later than 1/70 does the ADR tag match the chassis number on the body?

You'd want to check all this as well as doing what S pack suggests. If the car isn't going to be rivet-counted I know some of this isn't important to you but it may help future sh!tfights about identity etc especially if you've just spent $50k building it.

Yes it is a sl/r 5000.

All tags/numbers match, all paperwork is accounted for.
I have the original rego papers from when it was first registered, plus the plates I think.

The chassis number is in the engine bay front right I believe.

Thanks for the replies

And after you spend $50k on it and try rego it

The govt will want stamp duty on the value of the car

Even though you have slaved to restore it... paid GST and numerous other taxes getting it to where it is

They don't care that you paid $500 for it

They just care what's its dutiable value is the day you try rego it.

Had the same problem registering the Sloper with stamp duty.

Had a letter from mum saying it was given to me by my father in the 80's and that it was valued at $800 then.

The old rego was still on file and adresses matched.

Luckerly l struck one of the old guys there who was sick of looking at modern stuff ard we negotiated a value.

l have been told if you can show there receipts an what you spent they will discount it but it proberly depends on the day and what colour underware you have on.

regards Bruce

In NSW it is the purchase value, or market value of the car at purchase for stamp duty. What you spend on It for rego is irrelevant. If you bought a vehicle for $5000 needing tyres, exhaust, transmission, brakes etc and it cost you another $5k to get it ready for rego the stamp duty is on the $5k, not the $10k. In NSW how I read it anyway.

The stamp duty should be capped (for 'collectable' cars) at the new car value!

Are you listening Ricky Muier?

Is it the higher of the two values ? I doubt it simply says "OR".

It says higher, but it is your interpretation of market value in my opinion. If you paid $5k for it that is market value. It doesn't say what market. There will be a definition of it somewhere though.

Went down to look at it again with my old man on Sunday and I had snapped some pics of my old co-workers slr to see if the sizing and spacing were spot on and nothing was suss. I appreciate that, would have never thought of it.

Never seen that on NSW RTA paperwork! I guess if you ever got nabbed for it though that is what they'd use.

You are right Skap. There are a number of ways listed on the RMS website, from consulting a dealer, insurance company or NRMA, plus Glass's Guide or Redbook. It also seems to indicate that Market Value is there in case the vehicle was bought cheap and repaired before rego, hence the thieving %*$(!s want their cake and eat it too. Stamp duty was supposed to be removed with the change to a GST but the States decided it was a duty and not a tax so it stayed, now we'll never get rid of it. So you are essentially paying a duty on top of a tax (GST) which was supposed to be outlawed.

Exactly!

GST is federal. Stamp duty is State.

I just went thru this with the respective departments.

In Qld you can declare whatever price you want. If the person stamping the paperwork is clueless you will probably get away with it. However ..... once that paperwork is forwarded onto the State Revenue Service, they have the power to challenge it & cancel your rego. It's legal ransom.
