Brake Calipers trailing may foul the x-member Dave? A9X had them leading.

I wasn't sure which side they went on. Heath would know. I can swap them over if need be.

The sandblaster turned up. He came late, and had to leave before the job was done. But I can bring the panels down to get finished elsewhere. All of the inside was done, engine bay done. All hinges, and bits done. Doors are done. The bonnet, nose cone and hatch have been sandblasted already, but I need to strip off the old undercoat and redo them.

I think I will spend a stupid amount of time cleaning all the sand up. It's incredible how much is on the car. Probably worse that he didn't high pressure wash it as he was in a hurry. Some parts are already covered in surface rust. The exhaust manifolds are the worst. They look like they have been sitting in an ocean for a year.

I use diluted phosphoric acid on a rag then rub the rust away. Saves grinding, blasting or sanding and making the metal thinner each time. You just flush it off with water which neutralizes the acid so it doesn't eat into the metal. Use rubber gloves its a mild acid but still will turn your hands yellow and burns a little. The panels don't rust for ages once treated.

I had mine blasted about 10 years ago, it's been pushed about the garage since then but not finished. There is still sand in certain areas and I think there's quite a bit in the sills and chassis rails, the sand picks up moisture quite easily too it's best to get it all out.

Probably good I didn't blast the bottom. So there isn't any sand in the sills. I spent about 6 hrs making sure I got as much sand out as possible. Rubbed it off and vacuumed it. I have the KBS paint system I will use to treat the metal. This morning I will do the clean wash, then the metal treatment on the shell and all the bits. And hopefully I can get some epoxy primer on this arvo.

I have to go over it one more time to finish the prep, then a good wipe down. And it's ready for the epoxy primer. Can't wait...

After spending a couple of hours going over all the bare metal, then wiping it all down. It was finally red for the primer. Takes a while to paint the car inside and out. The underside has a light coat, as it is getting the stone guard. I might give the outer panels a couple more coats so I don't sand through as quick when I do the body work.
But, it's coming up nice. Will paint the floor inside with KBS rust paint..

Fantastic build David - I love this build thread - keep the updates coming please.

I noticed a difference in a panel in the boot between your car and mine.

Your car (I have circled the area of difference):

And my car (photo from 2011):

I see that our floors are completely different as well - I have the depression for the sedan spare wheel.

I wonder what the story is with this difference?

It appears mine has had a hit in the back somewhere back in time - I wonder if the boot floor in mine is a replacement from a sedan or if there was a change over in model year specification somewhere along the line?

Cheers, TB

Tyre biter, this car is a UC. Yours is an LX

Yep. Thanks for the pic. I haven't seen the difference before. Only been told the LX floor is lower.

My mechanic rang to give me an update on the 308 motor. Turns out its needs more work than I thought. I bought it because it was a runner, thinking it will just need a freshen up. But it needs boring, new pistons, etc. Heads need doing. He said about $3,500 to rebuild it. So I might put that on hold for now.
My chrome sill covers just turned up. And the seat trim kit I bought should be here early next week. All going well, except the motor.
Next job is to mask up the car so I can spray the underbody.

I prepped and painted the underside today. Sound deadener coat with chassis black over the top. Should be quite as a mouse. Front end can go in tomorrow. Yay.

In about a week it will appear to have progressed a lot. Should be on all 4 wheels, and all panels primed and bolted on.

If only I had tyres. The car is ready to come off the rotisserie now that the diff and front end are bolted in. Can't wait. I know where I will be first thing in the morning. MSWT..
