hey guy's, i have an autometer sport comp tacho in my dash running from the tach port of a msd 6al. when it hits around 2000rpm the needle starts fluxuating randomly all over the place, sometimes varying eather way by up to 500rpm. if i hit 4000 it's going absolutley rank. i was told i might need a potentiometer in the line??? any ideas or exactly what i need???

cheers.

Not sure, sounds like theres a problem with your tacho, but you could try the potentiometer option - dunno how to hook it up though - and it says in the instructions that you shouldnt need a tach adapter for autometer guages so im stumped on this one.

Regards Anthony.

yes i know. has me a bit curious as well. i had a vdo tach in there and it was doing the same thing, put in the autometer one thinking it would solve the problem but no luck.

oh, and before anyone asks, yes it is earthed properly.

Yeah thats weird, im just using my original torana tacho connected to the tach port on the msd and it works fine. as i said, its got me stuffed, although msd have a tech forum so you could get onto their website and ask the msd tech department what they think the problem might be.

Regards Anthony.

Normally wouldnt visit the "interior section", but saw the "tach help" as last post.
Site designers/moderators:
a separate electrical section would be good.............

Lcboi, saw your post on the msd forum. Dont know if their reply is terrible helpful, there explanation being that the fluctuations you see are from variations in voltage supply to the msd ignition and/or your tacho. Unless you have just twisted wires together, or your voltage reg on your alternator varies widely, than I doubt that this is the prob
This should be easy enough for you to verify with a digital multimeter, checking your voltages at all the connectors at different rpm.

There is mention of a tacho adapter, but no other details on the site.
Perhaps when you post again with them, mention the brand/model of the tacho or that it is a tacho for a simple points system etc.: its an American site - a Holden torana will not mean anything to them. or to get their interest its a GM car designed for australia.
Re potentiometer, you could purchase a 0-10K potentiometer( a couple of $) and put that in wire from the msd controller to the tacho, and vary the resistance and see it has any +ve effect - dont think it would do anything - but it wont cause any damage and is cheap to try.
