Today I got a new toy. I bought Dad's Mini Clubman S off him. He is getting rid of a couple of cars and I couldn't let this one leave the family.

It's a 75 model. Dad did it up 5 years ago. Full bare metal strip and rebuild. The engine is a 1275, dual SU's, cam etc, goes pretty well.  These things always seem really fast due to their go kart like steering and handling and the fact that you are only about 4" off the road. It has  the dual Cooper S fuel tanks. The numberplate is the same as Dad's first car in 1967 which was also a mini. I have got a couple of little things I want to fix up/change. Will keep you posted.

I've owned a few over the years, but none of them looked as good as that!

He has a Moke that he converted to a trayback ute and a 51 Morris Minor (8 horsepower, drum brakes, no seatbelts, definitely interesting to drive!)

Cool. Never even sat in one of these things, although I'm very interested in seeing what the experience is like.

Drove one of these as a daily for 5 years, you're right! Interesting to drive!

Also has a crash box and trafficators instead of blinkers. Google trafficators if you don't know what I'm talking about.

I think that's measured at the wheels. Not much difference to flywheel HP! It has a sidevalve 4 about 900cc from memory. 3/4 inch SU carb. One interesting thing is that it has no water pump, the engine relies on thermal siphoning to move the coolant around.

It can get to about 55mph on a good day, prefers to cruise on about 45.

You really need to be careful when you drive it due to the brakes and the speed that it accelerates, you need to make sure you have plenty of room before you pull out across an intersection etc.

Will try and get a pic. It has a really large top tank on the radiator. Something to do with hot water rises to the top of the system? All I know is that it works.

Yep, there were certainly some vintage, flat head motors that ran no water pump (Model T for example, at least most of them). I think maybe even some V8s although I could be wrong. Then there were some V8 flatties that had twin water pumps... now we're talking!

My error, the Minor of which you speak would have been side valve. They had the big tank and no water pump from memory. The one I had was the first of the overhead valves.

As soon as I read an 8HP Morris minor, all I could think was a Hyabusa motor and some good brakes. Leave it looking old man style tho.
