lol, perhaps they thought what the hell it's one HQ Holden taxi, it won't last the distance anyway so why not let the bloke have a go. :)

Actually what they should have done is raced it as a 308, and argued to be allowed to use the already homologated L34 engine (like was allowed for A9X). Then they'd have had a slightly heavier car with the same engine, box and brakes as the L34's but with a far stronger rear axle. HQ's can and do handle well if setup right (just like an LH can be made to handle as they were both hamstrung with similar setups). When you look at the qualifying times for the car as a 308 and then a 350 it qualified 20th and 17th respectively for 1973 and 1974 which isn't that bad - lots of privateer GT's, XU1's, L34's etc qualified behind it. Interesting that in the Muscle Car Masters today if you run a 308 in a HQ your minimum weight is identical to an LH.

Yes but how would LS coupe or even Monaro coupe be used for homologation of GTS sedan with 350? That would be like using S or SL sedans to homologate XU1? Different body, different driveline.

There was 213 HQ LS coupe with 350 built from start of HQ production until the end of HQ in 10/74. There was 1 x sole Monaro coupe with 350. All 214 of these were autos.

None of it adds up to me other than maybe GMH had finally built enough GTS350 coupe and sedan by 1974 Bathurst to allow the 350 engine in a HQ GTS sedan for Bathurst 1974.

I believe the HK 186S 4 speed GTS with 8132 cars produced in 1968 - 1969 was the base homologation for the 307 and 327 GTS.

Just as the LC GTR with in excess of 7000 cars made from inception to the end of production in 1971 was the base homologation for the LC GTR XU1.

If the HQ LS was the base homologation under Group E terms then only 200 HQ GTS 350 would be required for homologation of the variant and could be eligible to race after only 100 cars have been made and or sold.

It may be the 350 GTS was eligible to race in 1973 however the sole entrant of a GTS chose to use the 308?

I get that about the GTS and the GTR being the base for the GTS327 and XU-1, but the LS isn't the base for a GTS, it sits above the GTS - LS is a 2 door Premier which is the top vehicle in the Holden line-up, GTS is the sports vehicle in the Holden line-up. The above would be the same as using a Premier sedan as the homologation base for a GTS sedan, and also if it was the case GMH could have used S coupes in LC and LJ as the homologation base for XU-1 - which we know they didn't - they used GTR numbers.

My guess is they used GTS sedans as the base homologation and then there were 100 variants with 350 produced by 1974. The 308 would have had enough numbers for 1973.

I found this info for the HQ, it was a raced as a manual in both 1973 and 1974, 308 in 1973 and 350 in 1974.

It was actually running in 6th place when it suffered valve problems.

Also found this 1973 footage. In the first 5min you see footage from the in-car camera of the HQ, clearly a manual. There is an LC GTR crashed at the end of pit straight too.
