Just wondered what others thought on the cost to bring this back. I have been looking at the add for a while and based on the prices of hatches atm if others thought it may be worth consideration doing most of the work yourself that is.

I kinda like it as it is, bar the rims.

If you wanted to take it back then it would be worth watever a UC hatch would be worth I suppose?

Well based on what I see for sale Bomber it's think of a number and triple it. There are a couple of rusty shells on the bay and gumtree for sale for 20k. I know what your saying Bomber I can't believe the prices but that is why I am asking. If this one was a plated V8 then it may be a reasonable buy.

G'day All

Hatches are hot to trot as is the VW Kombi and I had 3 large offers on my SS in the last 2 days at Canowindra when I was there for Charlie McCarrons auction

So taking what I think mine is worth and what was offered, those rusty shells are not worth what is being asked, probably more like 5 G's or less considering what has to be done to get them up to scratch

RegardSS .... Barry

I tend to agree with the above. I would need to see it in real life to be able to comment properly, however, a few mods and leave it as is.
A price to bring it back to an LX? How long is a piece of string?
Are you doing it yourself or paying for all the work?
The interior looks to be Commodore Ss seats, so would think the dash is non Torana also.
Being realistic, it would have to be $30-$40k plus if paying someone else and purchasing the parts. Even that would be light on depending on what you wanted as an end result.

I was thinking of a 12 month project. Front end is really just a bolt on fix and not overly expensive. Flares would cover the mods to the wheel arches. The back panel would take a bit of doing but not impossible and the interior with time could be picked up off gumtree. The expensive bits are all there already. Doors, hatchback and driveline. A set of 10 and 8" hot wires, respray and off you go. I think it would be easier than the popular UC conversion. And you end up with a LX that is worth more than a UC.

It has a UC dash doesn't it ? I'd be checking it out very closely including build pics before parting with the cash.

I think he means you'll need to spend up to $100k to get that back to a high quality A9X replica. He'll have trouble getting LX hatch prices for that due to the work required to get it back to LX, someone wanting an LX may even argue it's easier to start with an LX shell and build it up how you like.

hot to trot as is the VW Kombi

There's a car yard in Concord full of them, brightly painted in pretty colours.

UC dash + handbrake in the centre of tunnel ??

Could've been retrofitted to give it a more custom look or to suit the front clip. The UC handbrake into LH-LX was a popular mod about a decade ago.

The foot park brake thing in LH/LX toranas and other American GM cars is total shit.

Not deleting it during my build is a regret,

My boss has one in his KIA SUV, he was telling me there's a special trick for the park brake, lol.. I figured it out the moment I saw it, finding the release was a little tricky as it's a flap that's flush with the dash, not a T bar.

I reckon it is best left as is, especially if it is a UC with LX tags. It is no different to some of those old show vans like Street Legal, that once may have been a HJ 5.0L Sandman van but today it wears a HQ wagon body plate. You'd have rocks in your head to buy it and try to make it look like a HJ van again - big waste of $. There is a flared and Chev powered hatchback on AMCS for $62500 that you'd never have a chance of building out of that bitza, go and offer $50k and you'd probably own it for that or a bit more. Sure it was once a Sunbird not a Torana but with a modified car like that who cares? Just pull the plates off and leave the ADR plate on it.

Yel327. I recon you are right. Ah well I'll keep looking and dreaming. Just the going to bed every night crying at the fact I sold my L31 plated SS in 95 for a song is starting to wear thin. Hehe. I'll get another one in the next year or so and it won't be going anywhere until I'm in a box.

Patience.

No point buying that thing and trying to turn it back to something nice just because you can't find a hatch.

The second you spend the money, a hatch will come up and you won't have the $$ to buy it.

Regretting selling a 5.0L SS hatchback won't be cured by buying an overpriced replica! Let's face it hatchbacks are in a bubble at the moment, eventually the pretenders should be affordable again. Unfortunately though the 5.0L SS won't. LX Hatchbacks and HK coupes are ridiculous at the moment, I'd steer clear and maybe buy something else that should appreciate rather than chase an LX SL hatch that may already have seen its peak (famous last words, they'll probably go even higher now!). To me XU1's that aren't fiddled with by dodgies are probably the best buy right now. 18 months ago it was HG GTS350 but that ship has sailed.
