Hi I hope this is in the correct section.

I have been gathering information about removing the motor 253 and auto gearbox by dropping the K frame for an upcoming paintjob. The air-box will be changed back to its original one for air-conditioning so no way the motor will go back from the top. I just want to know if I have a all the information required.

I remove the radiator ,transmission lines, wiring, steering, exhaust, tail-shaft speedo cable, cross-member ,brake lines. What else?

I then get the rear higher with ramps or simular. I undo the 6 bolts ? holding the K frame in place and lift the front of the car high enough to remove the K frame, motor and gearbox.I think it would just be reversed to replace it?

This is a project myself or girl have never done this before but never afraid to have a crack.Any information or tips would be appreciated as I have gathered lots of small bits of information from several different sources and like to what to ensure I am on the right track.

Thanks

I just did exactly this a few weeks ago.

Others will have other things to say, but what I did was pretty much what you've suggested. You can also leave the radiator in place if you like. I did and it was no probs. Easy thing to remove though. And you don't need to remove the steering column. Just the pin. This is what I did from memory, but mine was a manual.

Popped the back up on ramps. And pop some wood or something in to ensure it cant roll down them.

Cut the exhaust behind the extractors as it wasn't gunna be possible to remove the whole thing.

Undid all the exhaust right to the back of the car so it was loose and sitting on the axle.

Popped out the tailshaft

Undid all the engine stuff, wiring, fuel lies, cables, hoses etc..

Loosened the alternator so I could flip it around to the top of the motor so it would fit out from underneath

Took the cotter pin out of the steering knuckle

Took the console and front carpet out.

Undid the speedo

Disconnected the clutch cable

Took out the gbox crossmember and supported it with a jack on wheels

Disconnected the brake lines (that was bloody hard)

Undid the 6 bolts holding the K frame in place

Hoisted it all up slowly until there was room to wheel the whole sh'bang out from underneath. Then tied it off to the roofbeams

I think that was it.

Planning is important, and make sure you consider things like where your hoist will be, ie will it fit underneath or will it foul on anything. How high do you need to get it and what angle will it be suspended on.. As you need to get the k frame out forwards.. All that kinda stuff.. So you aren't cursing when its half way in the air and the engine hoist is on the shortest setting and its maxed out etc.. Go through the whole thing in your head beforehand.

Have fun.

Why not just unbolt the calipers and hang them out of the way?

I'd recommend proper jack stands under the front.

Absolutely! I only put those solid bits of hardwood in there for extra support as I ended up leaving it hoisted up for a couple of weeks so I thought an extra bit of support would be useful. I would never work under the car without proper jacks and supports.

I replaced the whole setup with a big brake kit from UPC so pulled it all out.

you've pretty much done the process the same way the engine came out of my hatch too. There is no easy or quick way to get the engine out and the air con box cannot be fitted after the engine is fitted so engine removal while attached to the k frame is the easiest. I left the wheels on and wheeled the engine and gearbox strait out from under the car.

its quite an eyesore those aircon boxes however living in Queensland air con is a must and my air con blows out air at 4 dec C from the 2 centre vents with the new gas running through the hoses.

I have run the air con hoses running through the radiator support panel so they don't run across the top of the engine which tidies things a little. I've also now painted/HPC coated my engine(now 355 stroker) & everything else with satin black but I am still in the process of putting it all back together so I have no recent photos. I am hoping that if everything is black it'll all blend in and nothing will stand out more than any other part.
