I get all that, i wasn't making a comment on your subject, just what grumpy suggested that 3.9 is a better ratio to use with the t56 just after i suggested 3.7 in the combination of components i would recommend....

On your subject, at the end of the day the tailsgaft in an lh with a ls and t56 is quiet short lessening the issues of which you speak !

And you really don't want to go that fast in a torana lol....220Kmph feels like 350Kmph compared to a modern-ish car.....

Regardless of all that...........the mob that did my tailshaft recommend that anything over 5000rpm should be a split shaft.

Really 5K rpm...tailshaft speed that does seem a little low, less that 180Kmph with a 3.5 diff, did you use a 2 piece shaft in the end ?

Iirc talking with a well respected guy over here, i gave him a spec of 300Kmph top speed with a 3.5:diff and 25-26inch tire....1 piece shaft was apparently going to work. I however now never want to go anywhere that fast in a Torana.

Yes, it was a 2 piece to start with. VB commodore. If my memory is correct, the starfire UC's were 2 piece for this reason. High ratio diff and extra revs.

Commo's have a 2 piece so there critical shaft speed is different.
Be hard to properly run a 2 piece in a torana with a 6 speed, the 2nd part of the shaft needs to be longer than the lower control arms or you run into angle issues, so it would mean a really ahort frt section which then becomes pointless.
I have run ve commo's with 3.45, 3.7 and 3.9 diff gears,
The 3.7 was the best all round, the 3.9 makes first nearly useless unless in peak hour traffic, also wasnt nice when cornering, rev hard in 2nd or drop off cam in 3rd.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't VE's have independent rear end where the diff is bolted to basically the body? And also run a split shaft?

Sure does.
All commos have had spilt shafts tho, even the earlier live axle jobs.
There is a change over length, to go from single to split, dont know it off the top of my head.
Alot more to the simple tailshaft then people think.
actually almost every aspect/part of a car when looking into the engineering has its issues, its all those small 1 percenters that really make the car.

^^ Yep at a certain length 2 piece is recommended then weight, rpm,hp etc is factored in to shaft size & all sorts of things

Ha ha first i couldn't find my thread cause it was moved and now it has turned into a debate about diff ratios and tail shafts etc.

A lot can happen in a few days.

Guess what that shows and alot of people agree, there is more to an engine/gearbox swap than just changing the engine and gearbox.
This is where the cost blows out.

Absolutely agree mate. I am up to the fuel system and diff/tailshaft stage right now.

I went into it with my eyes open and a realistic expectation of what the cost would be.

I also weighed that up against the cost of doing a 355 stroker, box, diff etc and what the comparable horsepower per dollar cost would be.

A half decent stroker motor itself can chew up $15,000 without even thinking twice about it.

Im also enjoying the challenge of getting all the LS3 stuff sorted out as i go.

You guys think its hard just to do an engine swap. Shit I'm doing an awd Adventra swap into mine including all Commodore front suspension crossmember and 4l60awd gearbox. Try getting ur head around that.

Can anyone give me a measurement from underside of engine xmember to top cf chassis rail and top of ls1 engine please. Will need to know exactly where you measure to and from. This will tell me if i have my engine crossmember in the right location for over all height and bonnet clearance.
Thank you in advance.

Hey Adrian,

How are you progressing with your ls3 build? Can you let me know what combo you ended up running with for driveline fuel system and stuff?

I have just recently fired my ls3 stroker up and starting to tune while I finish off the left over bits and pieces.
