Hi Pugsley

Welcome to the forum.

The numbers that you have given accord with each other datewise so it is more than likely that the tags all came from the GTR that you have described. Only an inspection of the vehicle by a person familair with the identifiers of a GTR can categorically say whether the car is genuine. It goes without saying that a GTR or XU-1 can be 'manufactured' by attaching genuine tags to a base model. Someone from a nearby Torana club may be able to assist.

Cheers

Hi gtfella

The VIN would be 8D11LCL219436. It comes up as an LJ GTR completed in Adelaide on 27/10/72 and sold by dealer 286 (GMH Internal) during 10/72. The original engine number was JL23597. The colour is The Lone O'ranger with black vinyl interior.

All numbers are consistent datewise.

Hi John

That VIN relates to a GTR completed Brisbane 23/11/70 and sold by Boyded P/L of Rockdale NSW during Jan '71. There is no engine number recorded.

Do you have any other tag details?

Cheers

Hi Roddo

Welcome to the GMH-Torana forum.

The VIN relates to a 4 door S model completed in Brisbane on 1/11/71. It was sold by J N Caldwell P/L of Crows Nest NSW during Nov '71. The car was fitted with a 2850 cc (173 cid) but the engine number is not listed. It left the factory with a Trimatic auto, disc brake front end and a 2.78:1 ratio diff. It was Brooklands Blue with black interior.

Do you have the Chassis Number?

Cheers

You'll be able to find the PSN in the records and then reconstruct the VIN. Plus work out the ENG, TRANS, RRAXLE codes and the BODY number for the BODY plate. But the paint and trim lines cannot be worked out except by what evidence is on the car. The PSN will give you what the car was originally too, ie S, GTR, XU-1 etc. I wouldn't bother renewing tags, you have the important one. Just knowing what the others said will be good enough, although it will always be de-valued because of the missing tags.

I just looked it up. At first glance I'd say it was H296444 (so VIN should be from memory 8D11LDH296444 (someone please correct if wrong!)). This was a GTR completed on 18/10/73, and sold in 11/73 by dealer 054. BETSBAC code is 76203C0, which is GTR,202,M20,manual steer,discs,3.08,no A/C. If I were you i'd check all other Brisbane PSN's from 9/73 area to 11/73 area that end in 444 that are coupes just to be sure, but this could be your car! Damn. I just found H297444 which is the same build configuration completed on 26/10/73 so that could be it too. This was sold by dealer 630 in 4/74. Those appear to be the only possibilities. See if you can find out any info like when it was first registered and where, or old rego papers with dates close to those selling dates. Also, if you can find an original engine number. One of those two above has an engine number recorded, the other doesn't. Good luck!

Wouldn't those numbers on the back of the ADR tag make up part of the body number on the trim tag...not the vin?

Hi Nitter

Good question. Normally in the case of Brisbane built cars that would be true, but from mid-May '73 Brisbane cars got their Body Number from the 6 numerical characters of the PSN (the last part of the VIN). Prior to that, Brisbane Body Numbers were from an unrelated sequence and had 5 characters.

Hi folks,

Found Some photos in storage. I will post more soon.

Here are details of my families Xu1's. The first being my brothers (73), and the other my uncles. Unfortunately both were sold some years ago. I am pretty sure my brothers (73) was stolen shortly after he sold it? It was a rare beige colour.

If anybody knows anything more about these vehicles or there whereabouts, I would be interested to know.

I have various photos of the cars which I will post if requested.

Mate the red one had been repainted. the beige one was totally original. The headlight sourounds were blacked out, however were faded and the flash on the camera did not help.

hi baz , i have a blue plastic gear at the end of cable at g/box end , there are numbers on it .....- 7430970 holden 112 , do these numbers mean anything. cheers dave

and yes a outer and a inner and a blue plastic gear at end. cheers

Hi Daf67,
the locating tab at the extension housing must be in the slot, if on top your gears get chewed up, check that the cable is still turning at your speedo end. the metal clip holding the drive gear in the extension housing can also break.

Never heard of a 100mph speedo in a 6cyl model, but I agree it might be possible that a Brabham could have used them, these are the same otherwise as far as I know, the dates of the gauges might be a hint.
If it is a Brabham one, you need to move the switch on the back of the tacho to 6cyl for it to reade correctly.

The blue gear is for 3.08 diff, the white one is for 2.78 and I think the 3.36 is yellow one or something?
All these are for standard size wheels only.

Mike

Hi all..
Im looking at buying this LC GTR XU-1.
Built 19/8/1970 Adelaide build..lc16##2a...scribe number 8##4(on back oc compliance plate)..
Has the 3100x 2###7 engine with #28###43 G90 head.
It has girlock front brake callipers,,disc size around 230-240mm(hard to measure, see pic), looks like a heavy front end..as pic..with sway bar
.Its Rally red.
NUMBERS HIDDEN FOR OBVIOUSE REASONS GUYS.

It has the compliance plate which matchers the chassis, has tank, tripples (not on), large master cylinder.. fuel cap
Doesnt have steering wheel and rims not sure about extractors and has aussie 4 speed as to opal...
needs work...

Question..It is missing the "vin" plate and the "body id plate". The seller says that is how he got it in 1998?
Can I get new plates made as I have the rego papers with the matching engine/chassis numbers?
