In reality, if there are no tags, you won't get it registered in NSW.

"No Tags = NO REGO in NSW"?? Not from what the RTA has informed me of on several occassions...... So I'm hoping You're wrong there ENDER.....

Post up what you know, and who to talk to in the General Tech help forum and I'll pin it.
AFAIK RTA may allow remade tags, but only where the existing tag exists.
One thing I was told, was that if the vehicle had had the shell replaced (legally) then what
happens if the "old" shell/chassis number turns up because someone has carted it off and
repaired it before it could be cut up....
Very interested to get the facts from you, as will be many others.

CHASSIS N0: ALJ05302A ENGINE NO: JL420062 http://www.justauto....82-fbe97ce4155a
Hi Mate
Nothing can be established from the Chassis Number other than it was current for the second week of May 1972 at the Adelaide factory.
The engine JL420062 was originally fitted to a 2 door "S" model that was completed in Adelaide on 16/10/1973.
Without the VIN, caution is advised.
Cheers

The particular Car I am looking at has the following no.s-
Model LC 82911M
Body No. 119528
Trim 1815 40V (or A0V)?
Paint 568 12573
Chassis No. 82911CH175274
Engine No. 186P76433
In the ad the seller also QUOTED the following Model No. LC82911M LC16762B
and also says it was manufactured in Brisbane in October 1970 and one of the first 400 XU1s built. The color is "Plum Dinger"
Can anybody tell from these no.s if it is genuine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi, I have just joined and although I don't own a Torana at the moment I have owned a GTR and a XU1 in my younger days. I am now considering purchasing an XU1 and was wondering how to tell if it is genuine?

Hi Bill
Welcome to the forums. From the info provided and the link to the TradeMe ad - the only thing that can be said is that the tags indicate an LC XU-1 that was completed in Brisbane on 26/10/70 and accord with each other from a date perspective. As you would realise, the tags are only a small part of the story. An expert eye needs to look over the car in detail to determine its authenticity and originality. A couple of other things that can be established is that the engine is not original or indeed an XU-1 version nor are the wheels.
PM me if you need some pointers.
Cheers

LJ GTR completed 26/9/73 in Adelaide and sold by Sydney Atkinson Motors, 20 Terrace Dve, Perth WA during Oct '73. The original engine number was JL407302. The original paint was Covert Met and the trim was Juniper vinyl.
The numbers all accord datewise.
PM me with your email addy if you would like a screenshot of the VIN disc entry.

Welcome to the forum.
That VIN relates to a GTR completed in Brisbane on 4/11/69. The first XU-1 didn't appear until Aug 1970. Do you have any other tag details as a cross-check for originality?

Sorry but not much can be established from what you have provided. You need to find the VIN tag. All that can be said so far is that it is probably a Sydney built GTR from around May '70. Sebring Orange tends to support this, but there is an outside chance that it may be a July '71 Brisbane built car. What is the Chassis Number stamped into the inner guard? This will clarify the build month but not the individual car.

Hi Robert
Looks like an April '70s Sydney build. The VIN will confirm it.

Just went and had a look at an LC GTR Torana. The owner claims its is a GTR and was just wondering if any Guru's can help me out.
So...basically I only have the Chassis number LC20872A at this stage. The car had all the GTR trim, dash and steering wheel which obviously doesn't mean anything but gives me a small amount of confidence. The tags were not on the car but he claims to have all of them plus the original engine and gearbox...which were nowhere to be seen, but assures me they are at his brothers house as he was the previous owner.
So once I get the tag details and engine number off him, will this give me the info to match the chassis number to the tags? or is there no way of guaranteeing this?
Cheers for your time
Dave

All that can be said from the Chassis Number is that it is an LC Torana (model unknown) built in Melbourne or Adelaide in mid November 1970. Since Holden didn't record which Chassis Number went with which Body Number and which VIN went with these numbers, the best that we can say is whether all the tag details 'fit' together timewise. If the tag numbers don't 'fit' it will be obvious and therefore the car should be viewed with caution. If the engine number is available and it is not a restamp, that can help, particularly if the number is listed on the VIN disc.
Having said all that, even if the numbers are all date consistent, and the VIN indicates a GTR or XU-1, we must also be wary of a re-body having been undertaken. In this regard, an expert should look the vehicle.
When you get the other numbers, see if the Chassis Number on the ADR tag matches the Chassis Number stamped on the inner guard. Post the other numbers or PM me if you want to keep the numbers to yourself at this stage.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers
