Hi Guys,

I'm new to this, so hope I am in the right spot.

Looking for some information, perhaps from Bazza, on my LJ 2 door, believed to be XU1. The 2 front tags are missing. From the ADR tag I have 10/72, ALJ14100B, which matches the LH inner skirt. It has all the usual & obvious XU1 bits, except for fitment of a V8 & 5 speed box. Has been in its current form since prior to 1982. Are there any smaller & less obvious identifiers that I can look for, to indicate XU1 or not.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Peter.

Hi and welcome Peter,

Can't tell anything about the originality from the chassis number except it is a Brisbane Built car.
Apparently the last three numbers of the PSN (vin number) on Brissy cars was usually written in texta on the back of the Compliance plate (the one near the wiper motor). If you remove the compliance plate and there are numbers on the back then PM Bazza and he might be able to narrow down what your car could be.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the welcome & the info.

I was aware from the chassis no that it was a Brisbane car, which is consistent with it being an XU1, & had also heard about the black texta on the back of the ADR tag, but am reluctant to consider removing the tag, as it still retains the original wide rivets & didn't want to disturb it. Without using ID numbers, are there any small, subtle, or less obvious differences on the car that might give some clues, such as holes, clips, brackets, bolts, hoses, pipes, etc, etc. I know this will be no proof, but will be a guide.

If all else fails, & curiosity gets the better of me, I may still have to remove the tag.

Hoping there are some answers.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter

Don't bother removing the ADR tag of a Bris built car unless it was built later than early May '73. If there is any texta remaining there, it will only give the Body Number (not partial VIN or Chassis Number) and you don't have anything to compare it with in any case. The VIN tag supported by the ADR and Body ID tags is the only definitive identification in terms of model and build completion date.

Cheers

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to identify my LC GTR XU1 Bathurst Torana and I'm hoping someone on here can help. First up here is the info off the thin long tag, 82911CH190822, I know it's a
GTR XU1 built in Acacia Ridge in Qld and what I have read it's the second run but if that's wrong someone may be able to shed light on that, Second
here are the rest of the Numbers. Model No: LC82911M, Body No: 09185B, Trim: 1814-40V, Paint: 568-12572 and finally the Engine Bay No: LC14198B.
I don't know what the engine was but have been told the it would have started with CK and endied with X, If someone out there can help with authenticating my Torana it would be most appreciated.

Cheers, HQGTS253

hi mate
and to add to the news that the cars is not a xu1, that shell is not the right shell for your 4/71 vin tag [ Engine Bay No: LC14198B.]

cheers gong

Hi John

As I explained to him in a private PM a couple of days ago, that there is a possibility that he has an August '70 XU-1 completed in a batch around 18th Aug '70, the missing VIN tag of which has been replaced with one from a later GTR.

So let's not say that it is not an XU-1 yet.

Cheers

That post is really tricky to read! Anyway something dodgy is going on there I think, one tag (82911) says GTR and the other (82311) says S model. I am sure someone will dechiper the whole lot for you soon enough

OK, its missing 2 front tags and has a ql block... i think you would find it hard to convince people it is a "genuine" xu-1, despite the evidence he is putting forward....

The tags and the block are important but not the whole story as there are many indicators that a car left the factory as an XU1 or not.

The advert seems pretty straight up to me but if you are planning on spending $30k then check, check, check, cheque - in that order.

Nice looking car in the pictures but as you are clearly being asked to pay a little extra because its an XU1 then simply do some more physical investigation.

For a minute just forget the fact there are claims to it being an XU1 - a good quality tidy two door LC XU1 replica is going to be worth what? Maybe $20-25K?
So its not much above a non-genuine car anyhow so overall it seems good value.

And if it had all matching numbers/block etc etc and was in that condition then whats it going to sell for in June 2011? Maybe $40-45k?
So you are getting a $10-15k lower price than if it was 100% right.

Adam I know that you watch prices pretty closely and have a handle on this stuff. Do you think that's a reasonable summary of pricing?

That is very true but in my opinion depending on how many genuine parts are missing ( original engine ., steering wheel , tags ETC ) determines how much a collector car is really worth .. I think it's worth the money but need to find out if it genuine or not ..
