The tags and the block are important but not the whole story as there are many indicators that a car left the factory as an XU1 or not.

The advert seems pretty straight up to me but if you are planning on spending $30k then check, check, check, cheque - in that order.

Nice looking car in the pictures but as you are clearly being asked to pay a little extra because its an XU1 then simply do some more physical investigation.

For a minute just forget the fact there are claims to it being an XU1 - a good quality tidy two door LC XU1 replica is going to be worth what? Maybe $20-25K?
So its not much above a non-genuine car anyhow so overall it seems good value.

And if it had all matching numbers/block etc etc and was in that condition then whats it going to sell for in June 2011? Maybe $40-45k?
So you are getting a $10-15k lower price than if it was 100% right.

Adam I know that you watch prices pretty closely and have a handle on this stuff. Do you think that's a reasonable summary of pricing?

yeah agreed.... but all original I would have thought more that 40-45 if it is a CK...BUT there are some XU-1's around at not far from that price, although LJ's. and they are still for sale, so in the end will probably go in the 40's.

Hi There everyone, hope someone can help me with this. I have stumbled across an old Torana, covered & behind a shed. Its minus an engine and a few other bits n pieces and needs restoration but otherwise in not bad condition. The owner is willing to part with it so if it is the real deal I will have myself a nice resto project.

Model LC82911
Body No 22049B
Trim 1190 40X
Paint 568 11429

Vin 7A889030704898564

PSN 82911CH621887

Chas no: LC 05706 B

Date on the firewall tag 2/70

I do have photos if necessary.
I would appreciate any info regarding these numbers, but also to check it is genuine & not an imposter.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ant

Welcome to the forum.

The VIN 82911CH621887 is recorded as a Sydney built GTR completed on 23/2/70. There is no engine number recorded as the car was used internally by GMH Sydney.
As mentioned, the colour was Sebring Orange and the interior is black vinyl.
The numbers all accord with the build date but can you check the Chassis Number LC05706B. I have no idea what 7A889030704898564 is, but it is not a regular feature of an LC Torana.

As a matter of interest, the XU-1 wasn't released until August 1970.

Hi Rob

Process of elimination tells me that that VIN relates to PSN L141668 which is a GTR that was completed on 31/12/69. Being completed before 1/1/70 it probably didn't have an ADR tag so is only missing the Body ID tag. There is no engine number recorded but the car was sold by dealer 162 (Attwood Motors - Stirling St Perth WA) during Jan '70. The colour and trim details are on the missing Body ID tag. The VIN and Chassis Numbers are both consistent with that completion date.

Cheers

Thanks Bazza,

I have a friend who found this car up in Broome in W.A.
It was in a back yard with a cover over it, the car needs a full resto but the info you have provided has been very helpful.
I will post some pictures when I get some.

Cheers Rob

Hi all
currently looking at an LJ XU1 to purchase and has the 2 ID plates on the radiator support panel are missing and the engine has been changed for a 186 block, so the only info I can get is the vin number BLJ18572A and the head number 2815843 can any one help me identify this vehicle, is it an XU1 or copy. All other things point to an XU1 large petrol tank,, globe bathurst wheels , correct dash and GTS steering wheel.
Please help
thanks roscoe

Hi Roscoe

BLJ18572A is the Chassis Number not the VIN. All that can be said from the Chassis Number is that the vehicle is an LJ Torana completed in Adelaide during Feb 1973. The head number 2815843 is correct for an XU-1 but it goes without saying that the head may not be original to the car. What are the other numbers on the head eg, L 3 2

If the ADR tag is still fitted and the seller is prepared to remove it - there is a possibiltiy that the last few digits of the VIN are scribed onto the back of it. This being the case, it is usually easy to id the VIN and therefore the vehicle.

Cheers

Hi Tony

Welcome to the forum.

I am assuming that the last character of the VIN that you have given is a zero not a letter "C". This being the case, the car is an "S" Model 2 door, completed in Brisbane on 3/12/1970 and sold by Savell Bros of 412 Forrest Rd Hurstville NSW during Jan of '71. The original 161 engine number was 2600H27996. The car left the factory with a 3 speed transmission, drum brakes all round and a 3.08:1 ratio conventional differential.

If you can provide the Chassis Number and the details from the Body Identification tag, some more info may be provided.

Cheers

Bazza

Hi guy's, would be great if someone can help with some info on my Torana.

I believe it's a genuine LC GTR, but wouldn't mind the experts checking the numbers for me.

The original engine is long gone unfortunately, it's just a rolling shell I'm about to restore, and I have all the tags.
