Hi ackzack

Welcome to the forums.

The VIN relates to an LC GTR completed in Brisbane on 14/9/71 and used internally by GMH Sydney. The original engine number was CF8460. The car was one of only 650 odd GTRs fitted with the 2850S engine and Aussie four speed transmission. The colour is Phantom Grey Metallic (Mk1) and the interior was black vinyl.

Mod LC82911M means GTR with Manual transmission
26293-B means the 26293rd LC body produced in Brisbane
Trim 1833 is GMH ref for Phantom Grey Met
40V is black vinyl
Paint 567 13128 is the paint manufacturer's ref for Phantom Grey Met
VIN 82911 = GTR, C = Series (LC), H208978 is the cars PSN (production sequence number) for the factory.
ALC40199B is the Chassis Number (this exact number must appear on the ADR tag AND stamped on the inner left hand side guard).

Nothing can be established from the Chassis Number LC34257B other than the car is an LC Torana (model unknown) completed in Brisbane around the 20th May 1971.

I hope this answers your questions.

Cheers

Hi David

You may already know much of this but you have an S Model 6 cylinder 4 door that was completed in Melbourne mid Feb '70 (no date shown on the VIN disc). The car was sold by Reg Hunt Motors Pty Ltd, 77 Nepean Hwy, Elsternwick Vic (again date not recorded on disc). The engine was a 138 (2250cc) - number not shown, 3 speed manual transmission, drum brakes and a 3.08:1 conventional diff. The colour was Kashmir White and the trim black vinyl.

Cheers

Hi John/lj

Welcome to the forums.

The VIN relates to a GTR completed on 6/12/73 and was one of the last 20 or so GTRs built in Adelaide. It was sold by dealer 691 (Smith Motor Company, Port Adelaide SA) during the same month. The original engine number was JL442012. The colour that you say is Turnpike Orange is actually called and promoted as Tangerine by Holden. The trim is black vinyl.

The Chassis Number and Body NUmber accord with the build date.

Cheers

This is my first question here so hope I've put it in the right place....

We have 'inherited' our son's car as he has nowhere to keep it at present and my husband is doing some work on it. He's more of a hotrod person so we have a few questions...

The car was bought many years ago as a 1970 LC GTR. The problem we have is that we are trying to work out exactly what is right with it and what isn't.

Some yeras ago, when it was still being driven, two older men who had worked at GMH both told him (at seperate times) that the model he had was a limited run model as it was the last of the LCs and had LJ front end. Also the front end is mounted about 10mm higher than normal. I have no idea what this means....??

The tags on the car have
Body Identification

Model.....LC 82911
Body Number 1948 A
Trim 1199 - 40V
Paint 568 12204

I have sussed the paint is Indy Orange (and found traces of that under the current white paint)
Trim is black vinyl.
I know the model is right for a GTR but have not found what that body number means.

Chassis is LC 18334 A

Can anyone tell me what else I should be looking for to find out more about the car and if anyone knows about that LC/LJ story.

Thank you.

Do you have the VIN number off the small skinny tag on the radiator support ? Also what is the engine number ?

The old men may have had dementia.

The engine is no longer in the car.....the one that was in it when it was bought was a 186A. We still have that motor but no idea if it's the original.

There isn't a tag on the radiator support at the moment, but we have a feeling that son took one off for safe keeping when the car was at a mate's place......I will ring him as soon as he finished work. Husband says there are no holes where that rad tag would be either????

You could be right about the old men......but when a second one said the same thing, it made us think....

I'll get back when i have the other tag numbers.

Thank you...

Hi Harrysmum

As already mentioned, only the info on the VIN tag will tell give us the identity of the car in question. All we can say so far (from the body tag) is that the car appears to be a GTR built in Melbourne or Adelaide during Sept 1970. This is also supported by the Chassis Number. The LC range was built right through until Dec 1971, so the suggestion that your car has an LJ front end is a mystery to me.

1199 and 40V is GMHs reference to Indy Orange with black vinyl trim. 568-12204 is the paint manufacturer's reference to the paint that GMH call "Indy Orange".

The original engine would have a number commencing with 2600Sxxxxx

The VIN will reveal more.

Cheers

Back again....spoken to son.
There was never a tag on the radiator support and there are no signs that one was there..
The original rego has the VIN as ......... LC18334A
The motor we have which was in the car when my son bought it is....186A185742 if that means anything.

And I've sorted the LC/LJ front bit. It has the LJ grill at the front not the LC one.

Hi Harrysmum

The Chassis Number (in your case LC18334A) was the number used for registration purposes by the various motor registration authorities back in the day.

An engine bearing the prefix 186A originated in a HR holden.

The VIN tag probably went missing as a result of frontal damage due to a prior accident - A new radiator support panel would have no affixing holes for tags.

If your car has an ADR tag (the one fixed horizontally on the firewall), there is a good chance that a 4 digit number may be scribed on the reverse side. This may help to identify the associated VIN.

Cheers

Genuine replacement radiator support panels came with the ID tag rivet holes pre punched.

Hi John

Welcome to the Torana forums.

We have a dedicated thread for the verification of GTRs and XU-1s here: http://www.gmh-toran...ication-thread/
(topic added to this thread)

The number LC2930A is actually the Chassis Number - from which nothing meaningful can be gained (although if that Chassis Number is correct, I can see an issue already). If you have the full VIN and Body Number, please post in the correct place.

Cheers
