Thanks Bazza

I found the link to the "Vehicle Master Listing" earlier in this thread and was able to work out the other numbers.....except the dealer number.

Do you know who dealer 029 is/was?   Also not sure about the 'Z' value in the list after dealer - my car is '2'.

Thanks for your help. This is a great site.

Looks like I have led you up the garden path - he has actually bought a 2 door and these are the tags off it - he is still building the 4 door up , its funny how they breed isn't it ???

The car is currently white with a black interior which appears to be correct ? It has a 161 in it , the previous owner bought the car with a 186 in it but blew it up and fitted the 161 to replace it so the original donk is long gone unfortunately. Is there any way of knowing what the original engine number would have been ? Also what specs they are would be appreciated so he can try and source correct carbs, manifold etc.

Hi Blacky

82911CL156472 relates to a GTR completed in Adelaide on 20/7/70 and sold by Atwood Motors P/L Stirling St Perth WA during Sept '70. There is no engine number recorded but the original would have been in the 2600S187xxx to 2600S188xxx range. The original colour was Kashmir White and it had plain black vinyl trim.

The LC GTR came out with a warm 161 (2600) engine, two piece cast iron headers and a dual barrel carburettor (Stromberg WW11).

Cheers

That is the NZ issued Vin number Nathan and is no good for searching for info with...

are there any other tags on the car on  the front radiator support ?

Carjam gives the following details,

Year: 1973 Make: HOLDEN Model: TORANA Main Colour: Red VIN: 7A889030700055688 Plate: DQZ231 Engine No: CD388985 Chassis: 8B69DCZ756970C

Hi

The "CD" prefix engine and the "8B69" points towards the car being a 4 door S model with a 2850 (173) engine.

Cheers

that is a bit odd... nathan indicated it may be a GTR in another post... I assumed it would be a 2 Door.

Yes its a bit scary. Any info on that data is much appreciated. I'll have to compare with tag data later.

I'm buying the car off a mate.. Part payment made. If It is dodge I'll have to pull out it'd be a real shame though!

Two doors. Its a gtr/xu1. Mate had its potentially just a replica but at the price and for my needs it didnt matter and would have just been a bonus.

Its reg here as a gtr on the repco tag (from memory).

I'll throw some pics up the instant I get time.

Can anyone tell me exactly where to look/hidden numbers that I could find to establish what the car might be? Obviously if its hot or illegal then I need to distance myself from things pretty quickly and let the seller deal with it.

PS... He's a good mate, not dodgey. He bought the car a year ago and I bugged the shit out of him to sell it to me.

Hi Nathan

We can check the VIN (that appears on the long thin tag) and confirm the model and build details then compare it with what other details that you have. Being an export car, the chances are that there will be no ADR tag, but it should still have a "Body Identification" plate that will display the model, Body Number, paint and trim details. There should also be a stamped impression of the Chassis Number on the inner guard on the passenger side where the front cross member bolts up.

From what you have posted above ie. Engine number CD388985 (not a GTR engine) and 8B69DCZ756970C it doesn't look like a GTR unless these details are incorrect.

We can determine more when you provide the correct info. If you don't want to make it public, you can PM me direct.

Cheers

Thanks mate. Much appreciated.

All the info I have is on car jam

Year: 1973 Make: HOLDEN Model: TORANA Main Colour: Red VIN: 7A889030700055688 Plate: DQZ231 Engine No: CD388985 Chassis: 8B69DCZ756970C

I don't have access to the car.

Just to be clear I'm not worried if its not a Gtr...just if its supposed to be 4 door.

Were they ever made in NZ?

THANKFULLY the car is being purchased off a friend. Last I heard he spoke with his cert man and the bloke can inspect the car and reinstate the VIN number if necessary... I assume this means changing the system details to match the stamped chassis number (if it exists and if its different to whats online)

Can anyone.confirm that the details do for certain mean the tags are off a four door?

Hi Nathan

I have looked on Carjam and have confirmed the numbers:

7A889030700055688 is a number that NZ authorities call the VIN (it is not a VIN issued by GMH)

CD388985 is the engine number for a 2850cc (173ci) (This is not a GTR engine. GTR engines have the prefix JL and are 3300cc (202ci)

8B69DCZ756970C appears to be the VIN issued by GMH. The first part 8B69DC makes sense but the rest of it does not.

The 8B69DC means 8 (Holden) B (Luxury level S Model) 69 (4 door) D (Engine type 2580cc 173ci) C (made between Sept 1972 and Aug 1973)

It the GMH VIN tag was from a GTR, the prefix of the VIN would be 8D11L meaning Holden GTR 2 door JL engine.

No Toranas were built in NZ but there were many imported.

If the car that you are interested in is a 2 door - then it appears that it has been fitted with a 4 door GMH VIN tag and an incorrect engine.

The car may be a GTR or an S Model 2 door.

Until you have access to pictures, it cannot be ascertained whether it is a GTR or S Model

Cheers

Bazza

My plan essentially is to create my own version of the car.. As if I was working at the factory producing a special drag model.

So, might create a larger version of the xu1 wing, my own front lip, my own model badges, my own grille, my own bonnet etc.

Will be another never ending project.

I have my drivetrain coming together; I just couldn't bare to fit it to the 81 Gemini I currently have.

I just need to establish here that it is 100% legal (its not been an issue here for the car previously) and that its not stolen and retagged.

I need to get there and search for the stamped chassis number but here's what I know so far after asking mate lots of questions

The motor was a 202 & M20 4spd. It has the big XU1 brake booster & XU1 front suspension too. (Reinforced lower arms)

Hi

The Chassis Number won't tell you what model it is, but it will tell you an approximate build date and factory. You need to see if the car has the Body Identification plate - it is fitted on the passenger side on the radiator support panel. You also need to check whether there are 1 or 2 spare wheel brackets on the boot floor near the spare wheel well.

Cheers
