Hi ,

brand newby here .

I have a 1971 LC Torana , it was my first car when I was 18 ,(I'm now 40). Its been sitting around along time now in my garage .

I want to try and verify what it originally was . The car looks like an XU-1 in many ways. Everything is LC apart from at some time it has had a LJ steering column installed. One thing is it only has the compliance plate on the firewall.

What it does have from when I originally purchased the car , original sprintmasters not repros (LJ I guess), all black XU1 interior(no GTR badges) , the GTR dash ,big brake booster, big fuel tank , bob tail , triple strombergs, fluted guards (left guard looks like it has been repaired from damage in its past,paint mismatch ) . Body colour is Yellow with the XU1 Blackouts no idea if it's the original colour. Doesn't have the 3100X block . With all the dodgy things that went on with cars over the years with stolen cars and clones and body tags, I would really like to know what this car originally was when it rolled off the production line .

The first main question is, how much can I tell from the chassis number and the compliance plate on the firewall?

Secondly what other really small details can I look for on the body that might help with identification?

Welcome to the GMH-Torana Forums.

We can say that your car was completed in Brisbane around the first week of April 1971. There were only a handful of XU-1s built around that time at the Brisbane plant. PM me with your email address and I will send a list of things that you may care to look at to identify the model of your car. Without the VIN tag it may be impossible to identify the exact vehicle, but I may be possible to say that it is a GTR or an XU-1.

Hi I am looking at buying a project car and have come across an LC torana. I would really like to know if it is a GTR or an XU1.

Number stamped on wheel arch - LC25226A.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Pagewood assembled GTR completed on 6/02/1970. Sold by Dealer 618 in Zone 2 (NSW) but no sales date recorded.

No engine number recorded either.

The body number and the chassis numbers accord time wise.

41X is Antique Gold vinyl.

56711425 is Daytona Bronze Met

Hi All,

Need some help confirming the ID of my old LC Torry and don't know how to find it.

Had the car for quiet a few years now, tucked away in the back of the shed and mid life crisis says its time to rebuild.

Would like to know if I have a real numbers matching GTR as all signs point to.

Have 3 tags and 2600S engine prefix.

VIN: 82911CJ217869

Body: LC 09936

Think it should be a Blue GTR with Sandlewood trim??? as it is now.

Any information will be greatly appreciated to see if it all matches.

hi guys

i am looking at a 2 door lj torana which the owner belives is a gtr but i am unsure.

the vin 8d11pch274475j,it is the only plate i can see on the car, its in a shed with stuff on it and cant open the bonnet anymore than to see , so the numbers might be off

Hi Michael

8D11PCH274475J tells us it is a Brisbane Build LJ GTR XU1.

Completed on 16/04/1973. The recorded engine number is JP322563.

At least that is what the VIN tag is from. Whether the VIN tag belongs to the body it is attached to is another question to be answered.

Hi

This VIN relates to an Adelaide built GTR completed on 12/11/70 and sold by dealer 162 (Attwood Motors P/L Stirling St Perth WA) the same month.

The original engine was 2600S26382. Indy Orange with black vinyl trim.

Do you have the Chassis Number (as part of the 3 way check)?

hello all I have owned my 2 Door Torana for over 10 years now and love the old thing

I live in New Zealand and have all ways wondered if it is a real GTR or not

here are my number

paint- 567,15337

model- LJ 82911

Trim - 1870-50X

Body No-82163-A

Vin - 8D11-L-CL-247510J

Guard No - BLJ26553A

I am sad to say my third plate the on the fire wall is missing

any help would be greatly appreciated

Anyhow - If you haven't received any info about this car to date:

On the disc it appears as an XU-1 completed in Adelaide on 11/8/72 and sold by Leeton Motors P/L 47 Pine Ave Leeton NSW during Jan '73.

The original engine number was JP201058. The colour is Baroda Silver Mk2.

The Chassis Number, and Body Number accord with the VIN and the build date.
