Hi guys, I’m calling on help from the Torana brains trust.

My first car was an LJ XU-1 (lone o’ranger orange) it was 10 years old when I bought it.

I have the details of who I purchased it from and who I sold it to about 5 years later.

The chassis number is ALJ00090B and the build date is 1/72.

A couple of questions if I may:

I know where it went after me, but I have no history of the car prior to me purchasing from the previous owner. Can anyone help with this?

From the Chassis number, I know it was a Brisbane car and it was an early build (90th). How many XU-1’s were built in the first 90 cars?

Cheers Tim.

Hi Tim,

You can do a search under the freedom of information act with those details. Can't guarantee you will get all of the owners but you may get something.

I did this with my car and got a list of suburbs and years that it spent in those suburbs ( presumably from registration records ). I was fortunate enough to get an email address of the second owner of my car who i wrote to and to my surprise when he replied he corrected me and said he wasnt the second owner and in fact bought the car new and provided me some documentation and photos as well so you can get lucky this way.

Good luck with your search

Cheers

Hi Torry nut,

Thanks for the tip. As I have not looked into FOI before, is it just a simple search on the internet?
sounds like you got a lucky break with your car

Hi LCK 186,

From what you are saying, your information sounds reasonably specific, thanks for that.

….. and unfortunately I do not own the car any more, but do have a road registered ex group NC torana (a tribute to my original car)

cheers Tim.

Hi Tim, I suspect LCK186 has misunderstood your information request.

If you want to count by consecutive PSN's then of the 1st 90 Brisbane built LJ Torana (all models) listed in the Vehicle Master Listing only 4 were XU-1's.

The difficulty is the vehicles were not built in consecutive PSN sequence, nor were they built strictly in consecutive chassis number sequence.

In early production the chassis numbers were all over the place in relation to PSN's so I wouldn't attempt to try to pinpoint which car was yours with chassis # ALJ 00090B

Hi Dave,

That’s really interesting information. You said numbers were all over the place ….. well, who ever was stamping the ID plates was not up with what was going on as he stamped the plate as an LC torana, instead of LJ, even when the chassis # was LJ.

Cheers Tim.

Was that error on the compliance plate or had the Model No. been stamped on the body ID plate as LC82911 instead of LJ82911?

Stamping errors on tags were not common but they did happen. There are many examples of mistakes out there on all manner of Holdens and Toranas. One that comes to mind is an LC GTR that is stamped on the Compliance plate as being a HG.

The compliance Plate for your car may have been one of the 1st LJ plates stamped after a run of LC plates and the operator simply forgot to change that C to a J.

I assume you don't have recorded any of the other numbers from your XU1.

It had all of it’s original equipment except for the “JP” block. Even back then, many had “thrown a leg”

It actually had a 186 till I built a 202. Funny thing though, the 186 had a big valve head, which could have been the original head.

Engine # 186P73919.

Hi guys could you please help? A friend who is not on the forum has just purchased a LC Gtr. Problem is the VIN plate has been legitimately lost through the restoration.
Chassis LC17805A
Body 1928A
Eng 2600S22978
9/70 LC82911
Could someone help us out with the VIN?
I have pictures of the 2 tags, chassis and engine number to verify these.

Remove and look at the back of the Compliance Plate.  Are there any numbers scratched into the reverse side?
