L34... GMH...HM Header part...

Having a clean up and found this old HM Header part.. 

Reads ...GMH 9937151.........HM HEADERS.

Yellow crayon no reads AD8847....paper no inside reads 9939151...

 

I am thinking it is old stock from Geissler Motors Goulburn...

They did race an L34 at one time...the things you find!...

Wow, how many of those got chucked!
Mine still has them fitted but maybe not for long. A new set of extensions is under the work bench.

when removed from a stock L34 and extensions are fitted the difference is like night and day,..these things choked the life out them cars..

I believe that the reason that this part was manufactured and istalled on the L34s was that the regulations at the time stated that "the exhaust was free from the first connection on the system."

So being able to read past the regulations H Firth and co  realised that if they put the first joint right up near the engine the majority of the exhaust system was free hence it was open slather to do what they wanted and get greater HP from the engine

Smart people know how to write regulations

Smarter people know how to get around them and still comply but get the best out of the regulations while staying within their boundaries.

I note that one edge from the centre hole is stepped down a few mill...

Anyone know if there was a reason...clearance maybe?...

The gap in the fillet weld is space for washer/nut/ring spanner.
The opposite side of the engine uses an entirely different shaped unit that has a curved indent to accomodate that bolt.

That pic by Shiney looks like it has been done up on an asbestos gasket........

They had never been off the car until then. I have had new gaskets made up for them since.
